Graduation is Sunday

Thirty-five students will graduate from Hill City High School this year and the commencement ceremony will be held at the amphitheatre at Mt. Rushmore National Monument. The ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m.

The student speakers will be Taylor Sandven as the valedictorian and Skylar Ross as the salutatorian.

It will be a special day and a group of seniors have been working hard to also make sure the seniors have a special last week of high school.

Tatum Henderson, president of the senior class committee, said she and the senior officers are planning a campout on their last day, produced the senior video and also had a pizza/ice cream party in the works.

Taylor Sandven, treasurer of the group, said she liked that the senior class was so innovative this year.

“We were the first class in six years to have senior skip day,” Sandven said.

Rick Hamilton, senior class sponsor, said it will be good seeing the students graduate because a lot of them he has had in class for four years.

“To see them graduate is a cool experience. I’m excited to see where they are going to go after this,” Hamilton said.

He said this class stood out as a class that knows who they are and are very comfortable being in their own skin.

“They are very much themselves. They don’t try to be anybody or fit into a certain group,” Hamilton said.

Henderson is ready to graduate but said she liked being at Hill City because students don’t have to be as formal with teachers.

“At a smaller school we are able to have personal relationships with the teachers,” Henderson said.

Henderson said there are a lot of really committed students in the class who are always willing to pitch in and participate in what is planned.

“I like that we branch off into our own little groups, but when it comes time to be together as a class  we do it,” Henderson said. “I think we do a good job meshing groups and everyone gets along with each other.”

Henderson said she also enjoyed participating in volleyball, basketball and track in the last four years. For Sandven, she enjoyed being in theatre.

This year’s senior class motto is “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” The senior song is “On my Way” by Phil Collins and the flower is the Blooming Cactus.
