Before the Christmas season starts in Hill City there is one big event that will be entering its sixth year. Those that come to Hill City for Girlfriends’ Weekend will be able to shop, dine and soak in a lot of fun events. There will be sales, samples, classes and giveaways all around Hill City, and it all starts on Friday, Nov. 9.
Hill City Evergreen Garden Club will be doing wreath-making demonstrations at the log cabin scout hall that morning. People can stop by anytime between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to see the garden club make the beautiful wreaths for the Christmas season.
That evening is one of the biggest parts of the weekend, the fashion show. Merchants will be able to showcase some of their clothing and jewelry items at this event. This will be held at the new Firehouse Brewing Company Smokejumper Station at 7 p.m. Firehouse Brewing also serves food but they will only have food up to 7 p.m. Girlfriends can show up early to eat and drink then take in all of the different fashion items.
The money raised at the fashion show will go to the Hill City Volunteer Fire Department. It’s a fun show with prizes and gives people the opportunity to vote on their favorite style.
The show is at a new venue and there are eight stores participating in the fashion show.
One of the new additions this year is the website about the event. Women can go to hillcitygirlfriends.com to check out all that is being offered. One of the organizers, Lindsay Percival, said it’s a good space to figure out what classes they want to go to or sales they want to hit.
Social media has worked well to get people interested in coming to Hill City for the event.
Also new this year is a wrap party on the morning of Nov. 11. Women will be gathering at Twisted Pine Winery on Main Street to share ideas about the event and how to improve it next year.
When the event first started there were 14 people on a committee. There were four people that put it together this year.
Percival said they added a couple of things to the event this year so everyone should find something they like. The weekend is a lot about doing things and not just about shopping.
But a lot of the shops around town will have specials. Food and wine specials will also be an important component of the weekend. Live music will be at Miner Brewing Company and Naked Winery on Saturday.
Warrior’s Work/Ben West Gallery will have yoga classes on Saturday and Sunday morning. There are also some ornament making and Christmas sign making classes.
Around 30 businesses are participating in Girlfriends’ Weekend in some way.
“There’s plenty to do,” Percival said.
She said they are always looking to grow but it’s a good thing for the businesses that are still open. The event brings in people to their stores and restaurants and provides a little bit of a rush for all of the businesses.
She said even if women can do one thing during the weekend it helps the town.
Percival said there is a lot of local and regional women who meet in the middle in Hill City over Girlfriends’ Weekend. They could come from Wyoming, Nebraska, eastern South Dakota or some nearby Black Hills towns.
Percival said it’s a good excuse for girls to get out of town and get a kickstart on holiday shopping.
All of the different activities will put women in a good mood and allow them to work on themselves.
“It’s just a great event for women. Women seem to love it. It’s a good event for Hill City,” Percival said.
“It brings a lot of people into town during a slow time of the year.”
