Wanted woman caught in Hill City

At approximately 10:30 p.m. last Monday, Jan. 23, Pennington County Sheriff deputies located and arrested Cathy Jo Brown at the Super 8 motel in Hill City.

In December, Brown reportedly fled Wisconsin with her two children — her 9-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter — in a red 2001 Silverado K1500 pickup with Wisconsin plates.

Shortly before Thanksgiving, the children were reportedly taken from their home in Langdale County, Wisc.  According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Brown is wanted in Wisconsin on felony charges of interfering with a custody order. Investigators originally thought the group might have been in Tennessee, Illinois, or Wisconsin.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the U.S. Marshals Service announced that Brown and her children might be in the Black Hills, traveling with a woman identified as Amanda Hull (a.k.a. Amy Clark). Federal authorities were concerned the group of four was staying at remote campgrounds during extreme weather conditions.

On Monday night, deputies received a tip that a Chevrolet pickup matching the U.S. Marshals Service description of Brown’s vehicle had broken down near Castle Peak Road. Deputies later discovered that two women and two children had been given a ride to the Super 8 motel in Hill City.

Deputies found Brown at the hotel and arrested her without incident on felony charges of interfering with a custody order.

The children were in good condition.
