Ag landowners have a beef

You can add some agricultural landowners to the list of people who are up in arms over the assessed value of their property.
 At a special meeting of the Custer County Commission April 6, county director of equalization department head Leah Vissia discussed steps with the commission that were taken to bring the county into compliance with state law regarding property values, part of which was removing adjustments from agricultural land.

School board approves new math curricula

Students in Custer School District will have new and hopefully more effective ways of learning math next year, thanks to action by the board of education Monday. At its regular April meeting, the board gave the nod to the purchase of Big Idea math texts for grades K-5 and the Envisions curriculum for grades 6-12.

CDC: Stop over-sanitizing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has changed its guidelines on cleaning household surfaces. The agency now says cleaning alone is usually enough and that disinfecting is needed only in some circumstances.
“Cleaning with a household cleaner that contains soap or detergent reduces germs on surfaces and decreases risk of infection from surfaces,” the guidelines say. “In most situations, cleaning alone removes most virus particles on surfaces.”

Luitjens: ‘My biggest win was spiritual’

Retired Custer coach Larry Luitjens is the winningest basketball coach in South Dakota high school history. In 47 seasons as a coach—all but two of them as head coach—he racked up 748 wins, including seven state championships. However, Luitjens told a crowd in Rapid City last week his greatest win in life came the day he turned his life over to Jesus Christ.

Brown unopposed for Custer mayor

Bob Brown will be the next mayor of Custer, as he was the only one to turn in a petition seeking the position. He will serve a two-year term starting in July. Current Mayor Corbin Herman announced last month he would not seek reelection.
There will, however, be three races for seats on the Custer City Council. In Ward I, the seat occupied by Jeannie Fischer will be contested, as Fischer will square off with Corey Virtue for a two-year term.

July 4 plans taking shape

As all signs continue to point to a booming tourism season this summer, the Independence Day celebration in Custer in July is shaping up to be one of the bigger ones in the town’s history.
At the April 5 meeting of the Custer City Council, the council approved several requests from the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce and the Veterans Memorial Committee for events that will augment the July 4 celebration.

Vaccines available to all adults

Any South Dakota resident over the age of 16 is now able receive a COVID-19 vaccination, as the state’s Department of Health began Phase 2 of its vaccination program Monday.
South Dakota leadd in vaccination efforts, at both the regional and national level. As of last week, 43 percent of the state population had received at least  one dose and over 28 percent of the state’s population has completed sfull series.

­­10 years ago, 2011 — Drew “Sugar” Smith  beat out 16 other candidates to win the title of Miss Hermosa 2011. Swimsuit, evening gown and talent competitons, along with interviews, were all part of the contest ... Gary Lipp was the lone candidate for mayor after Harold Stickney decided not to seek reelection and Brian Boyer dropped out of the race ... After raising $1,200 from Cold Discovery Days, Cheyanne Bailey was still well short of the money needed to build a playground at West Dam. Because of that, she requested funds from the Custer City Council for the project.
