Former STAR at the fore at crackerbarrel

A bill to require Gov. Kristi Noem to create a plan to repurpose the former State Treatment and Rehabilitation Academy (STAR) property was among the issues discussed by the nearly 50 people who attended last Saturday afternoon’s District 30 legislative crackerbarrel at Custer Senior Center.

While he says he hated to sell the building, Custer businessman Phil Lampert says “it’s time for a new generation to take over.”
The building in question is at 506 Mt. Rushmore Road, which has been the home of Lampert’s A Walk in the Woods store and Custer County Candy Co. for the last few years. 

Wildcat Time shift working for CHS

A significant change in the daily schedule at Custer Jr./Sr. High (CHS) at the beginning of this school year has brought about a positive change in the atmosphere of the school according to administrators, teachers and parents. 
“Wildcat Time”—essentially a study period—was lengthened slightly and moved from the end of the school day to the beginning. That move, says principal Orion Thompson, has made all the difference.

Crackerbarrel is Feb. 8

A crackerbarrel featuring all three S.D. State Legislature District 30 representatives will take place next Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at Custer Senior Center. The event is sponsored by Custer Senior Center and the Custer County Chronicle.
Reps. Tim Goodwin and Julie Frye-Mueller, along with Sen. Lance Russell, will all be on hand to discuss what is happening with this year’s legislature as well as to answer questions. The event is free and the public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.
 

One year later, Serenity’s fate still unknown

Despite a search by more than 1,200 people covering 4,500 miles of woodlands and an investigation tracking down more than 220 leads and involving 465 interviews, Serenity Dennard remains missing and her fate remains a mystery.

Trailer lost in early morning fire

A trailer west of town is a total loss after it caught fire the morning of Jan. 31.
A call came into Custer County Dispatch at 6 a.m. regarding the fire, which was at the Four Mile Trailer Court west of town. 
Firefighters discovered fire coming out of the roof and around the chimney area of the trailer, said Custer Volunteer Fire Department chief Tim Parsons.

White House starts task force on missing, murdered indigenous people

The Department of the Interior, the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) held the first meeting of a White House task force to address the incidence of missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives, announced the Department of the Interior in a release.

Work being done to bring fireworks to Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is still in the process of evaluating holding fireworks there on July 3.
On Jan. 30, Patricia Trap, acting superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Rob Wallace, assistant secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks for the Department of the Interior, and David Vela, acting National Parks Service director, met at Mount Rushmore to discuss the proposal.

Convention of States movement hits Pierre

On Monday, Jan. 27, a crowd of grassroots supporters of the Convention of States (COS) movement gathered at the S.D. capitol building in Pierre.
More than 50 citizens from across the state met to speak with their local district representatives and show support for the cause.

Elevator issues plague area parks

Nearly seven months to the day that they first went down, the elevators at Wind Cave National Park still aren’t operational.
Consultants were brought in last week to chart a path to fix the elevators. Those consultants will write up a scope of work and a contractor will be sought to repair the ailing elevators.
“We will know more in the coming months,” said Wind Cave chief of interpretation Tom Farrell about what it will take to get the elevators operational again.
