Surprise inspections part of youth home reform

For the first time in South Dakota, unannounced surprise inspections will be conducted at private youth treatment centers as part of a sweeping oversight reform package being pushed by Gov. Kristi Noem.
Noem has proposed a major overhaul to how South Dakota oversees, inspects and updates the public about conditions in privately-run youth homes across the state.

Sherry and Marcel Wahlstrom are 2019 Custer County Chronicle Citizens of the Year

Compared with most Custer business owners, Marcel and Sherry Wahlstrom are relative newcomers. After all, they purchased The Bavarian Inn motel only a little over five years ago. 
However, in that time, they have turned the establishment into a first-class destination resort and have immersed themselves in community life with an attitude of “what’s good for one is good for all.”
That’s why the Custer County Chronicle has named them Citizens of the Year for 2019. 

‘The Best’ coming Jan. 15

On Jan. 15, the Custer County Chronicle and Hill City Prevailer News will put a new spin on the year in review when they publish the third annual “The Best,” which will feature photos and short descriptions of many of the things that happened in Custer County, Hill City and Keystone.
This separate publication will be printed in tabloid size in color, making for a great keepsake. It will be inserted into the Jan. 15 issues of both newspapers.

Wind Cave brought up during debate

Wind Cave National Park got a few minutes of national fame Dec. 18 when Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar mentioned the cave during a debate.
During the debate, which was held on PBS and co-sponsored by Politico, Klobuchar, a U.S. senator from Minnesota, interrupted an argument between U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind.

Schools want juvenile reform

The question was whether those gathered in the room would like to see the return of a STAR Academy-like facility return to South Dakota.
The answer was an overwhelming yes.
Those gathered were school administrators and school board members from the Custer and Hill City shool districts, as well as from Fall River County schools. The question was asked by South Dakota’s District 30 legislators—Reps. Tim Goodwin and Julie Frye-Mueller and Sen. Lance Russell—who met with the administrators and board staff at Custer Elementary School the evening of Dec. 17.

More than a new name for hospital

When you drive by the new Custer hospital in coming weeks you will notice the familiar burgundy “heart and cradle” logo of Regional Health will be gone, replaced by temporary signs showing in gold and teal the new name of the facility: “Monument Health Custer Hospital.” 

County settles on comp time plan

After discussing it several times over the past couple of years, it appears the Custer County Commission has settled on a plan when it comes to comp time for its employees.

Judge rules against Teasleys

Seventh Circuit Judge Scott Bogue has awarded a Rapid City couple a $5,809,82 judgement against Kevin and Cathy Teasley of Custer in a small claims suit arising from the sale of two cabins in 2016. 
In a court trial held in Custer Nov. 19, Bogue heard more than two hours of testimony from plaintiffs Ralph and Rita Dupres, the Teasleys and two witnesses who appeared on the Teasleys’ behalf.
