The Custer Ministerial Alliance announces the details of the annual Custer Community Christmas Project, a program whose goal is to bring the community together to experience the spirit of giving and sharing. Saturday, Dec. 21, is the culmination of months of planning and preparation. The distribution of food baskets is from 10 a.m. to noon at The Storehouse and the Select-a-Gift event at 12:30 p.m. that day.
The holidays should be a little brighter for 20 Custer flood victim families as the first round of relief checks were delivered by case managers or mailed last week.
Case Management Team leader Pastor Pam Power said payment per case is based on points and receipts received and verified.
“The Case Management Team will continue to gather information for unmet needs including additional receipts,” Power said.
In the discussion and planning stages for nearly two years now, the proposed new elementary school for Hermosa has finally received the official go-ahead from the Custer School District Board of Education. At the board’s December meeting held in Hermosa last Thursday evening, the body voted unanimously to move forward with the planned 64,000-square-foot facility which will be built adjacent to the west side of the current K-8 school building.
The holiday season will be in the air this weekend with a variety of activities to get people into the holiday spirit.
The 30th annual Custer Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, at 5:30 p.m. This parade of lights signals the kick-off of the holiday season. The parade will begin at 8th and Mt. Rushmore Road and end at Way Park on 4th and Mt. Rushmore Road. After the parade, Santa will appear at Way Park for the Juanita Fish Memorial Tree-Lighting Ceremony.

That is the final day the Sander Sanitation transfer site will be open after the Custer City Council unanimously approved an addendum to its contract with Sander for residential solid waste collection and disposal, an addendum that allows Sander to close the transfer site in exchange for lowering the cost for the city by $1 per residential unit for trash disposal.
The Custer County Commission has changed course in regards to holding Dec. 4 interviews for the position of airport manager for the county, deciding to table the interviews at a special Nov. 25 meeting.
At its Oct. 23 meeting, the commission voted to change the airport manager contract from five years to one year and to readvertise the position. At the Nov. 20 meeting, the commission approved job description and job title changes for the airport manager, much to the chagrin of several people in the audience who questioned why any of the changes were necessary.
Although forecasters had predicted six to 10 inches of snow for Custer from the Thanksgiving weekend storm, most of Custer County fared pretty well, with only moderate amounts of snow and relatively few storm-related incidents.
“All in all, it was pretty mild,” reported Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley on sunny Monday morning after the storm had passed and the snow was already beginning to melt.
The annual Hermosa Christmas Carnival is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Hermosa School gymnasium. Events will include craft vendors selling their wares in the big gym from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with kids and family events taking place in the small gym, including kids’ games and prizes.
There will also be a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and a soup and dessert lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Citing monthly losses of $5,000-$7,000, Sander Sanitation through its attorneys has proposed an addendum to its waste hauling contract with the City of Custer that, if approved, would see its transfer site off Sylvan Lake Road closed.
