Hill City Prevailer

An innovative and cooperative effort between Custer County Search and Rescue (CCSAR) and Black Hills Back Country Horsemen (BCH) is making huge strides toward opening the trails in the Black Elk Wilderness, demonstrating the vital role that these often-overlooked volunteer forces play in the National Forest and Black Elk Wilderness. Both of these organizations, though with different stated goals and objectives, came together around a need that affected both of them: clear trails for wilderness users. 

Nestled in the trees on a hill near Keystone with a one-of-a-kind picturesque view of Mount Rushmore National Memorial sits Mountain View Cemetery. Quaint and charming, the cemetery is home to more than 500 people, including some famous individuals and some local characters. 

The cemetery was established in 1900 by the Modern Woodsmen of America from land they obtained from Harney National Forest.
