SDSRM pays tribute to former curator Rick Mills

The South Dakota State Railroad Museum (SDSRM) has unveiled a new exhibit dedicated to the memory of longtime curator Rick Mills, lovingly nicknamed, “Mr. Railroad.” 
Mills, a railroad aficionado, prolific author and community pillar had a passion for preserving South Dakota’s railroading legacy and helped shape the museum into what it is today.
“If you had a question, needed a photo or just wanted to chat about railroading in South Dakota, there was only one person to go to: Rick W. Mills,” wrote  Steve Glischinski for trains.com.

Lions Club seeks donors for local blood drive

The Hill City Lions Club is calling on local residents to roll up their sleeves and donate blood at its upcoming blood drive scheduled for June 5 at the Hill City Center. The club has been partnering with Vitalant for the past two years. 
When Jessica Piece of Vitalant first approached the Lions Club, president Stefanie Doaty didn’t hesitate. 
“Heck yes,” Doaty said, “That’s what we’re here for, to help the community.” The idea was met with  unanimous support from the club members and has become a regular service project for the group. 

Buffalo Love Event bringing art to the Heart of the Hills

On June 14 the Heart of the Hills will beat with creativity as the Buffalo Love Event returns to Hill City, transforming downtown Hill City into a town-wide art gallery. 
The event, centered at Gypsy Rose Tattoo Studio, will showcase a wide range of local artists, from seasoned professionals to rising stars from the Hill City High School Art Club. These young artists will display their artwork at Gypsy Rose as well as other downtown businesses. 
“Kids from the art club are going to be all over town,” said JamesAnn Barlean of Gypsy Rose.

District celebrates Teacher of the Year awards

The Hill City School District brought the academic year to a celebratory close with an end-of-the-year awards ceremony. Staff and faculty gathered to recognize outstanding achievements across the district. Superintendent Blake Gardner presented several honors, including two prestigious Teacher of the Year awards.
Among this year’s recipients was Jared Noyes, who wrapped up his 10th year at the school. Noyes specializes in teaching world history, U.S. history as well as a handful of elective classes.

Celebrate women at Zonta Fest June 7

Before you make plans for next Saturday night, consider attending Zonta Fest at the Custer Beacon June 7 from 5-9 p.m.
Zonta Fest is hosted and coordinated by members of the Zonta Club of the Southern Black Hills, whose motto is to “build a better world for women and girls.”
Originally, Zonta Fest began as Luna Fest at the high school auditorium and featured a variety of vendors selling things that were oriented toward women. Since then, it has evolved into an event that focuses on women artists and musicians.
