I’ve decided to focus on incompetent workers this week. People who are so bad at their job, they likely should think of a new career. No, this had nothing to do with the recent departure of the Donald, who some feel was the most incompetent person to lead this great country.

Rather it has to do with Sadie. You see, she apparently does not have cancer and is not dying. In fact what she did have was a kidney on the verge of rupturing.

We’re making good progress

For the first time in a long time, our state is actually getting positive coverage by the national media outlets.

That’s right. According to many, we’re actually doing something right. And this makes me happy. I’m talking, of course, about our vaccination efforts.

Sadie: She’s better than the rest

My best friend has cancer. Both my human best friend and my four-legged one. Both are incurable. I can’t yet write about Missy, who I have known since I was 3. And I need to write about Sadie dog, as her time is mere moments.

Surviving the first quarter

Well, the holiday season is now over.

If you’re like me, you’re wondering where it went. It feels like it was just yesterday I was dropping paper turkeys off for kids to decorate at the school. Now, New Year’s Day is behind us, and we’re entering, perhaps, the worst part of the year: the first quarter.

Becoming Mrs. Badger

Well, for many people it’s “good riddance” to 2020. For me personally, it’s been the best year of my life. Besides my Grand adventure, on Dec. 21, when Jupiter and Saturn converged, my honey badger proposed to me. So yes, I am officially engaged!

What binds the season together

So to pull back the curtain: when I sat down to write this column I was going to take the time in this column and write about all the things I want for 2021 in kind of a Christmas/New Year’s column. To be honest, it was going to be cynical and kind of whiney.

Then I ate leftover Olive Garden from the other night, Faith Hill’s “Where are you Christmas?” started playing on my computer and my tune totally changed. No one wants to read a grown man whining in a column. So instead, I’m going to write about my affection for the Christmas music.

I was at dinner the other night and the person across from me began to talk politics. Although I know this is taboo, I let her continue. I replied cordially and her reply to me was “When Trump wins the election that will change.” Figuring this was a case of early dementia, since she is a woman in her early 70s, I politely replied, “Um, the election is over. It ended. Biden won.” She looked at me with eyes of steel and said, “I don’t believe that.” There was silence at the table. I was speechless.

A year of maturing

Somehow, I’m turning 27 next Wednesday.

Which is weird. Mentally I’m 12, I look like I’m 18 and if you were to ask me how old I am I’d still probably say 24 because I still haven’t accepted the fact I’m entering my late 20s. Yet, somehow, I’m a normal, functioning adult who does things like pays his taxes on time, has a steady job and contributes to society.

Like I said, I’m entering my late 20s, which makes me feel old. I remember being young and someone told me they were 27. I thought that was so old. Like, ancient. Yet here I am.

Turn on, tune in, drop out

My boyfriend just made a huge commitment and decided to do away with his WiFi internet. Not possible, some of you may say? Well that remains to be determined. Neither of us own a television, nor do either of us have any streaming services, other than Spotify or Sirius. Almost every night we hang out we end up talking, or sitting by the candlelight listening to “meditation” music. Once in a while, usually at my coaxing, we will watch a Pluto TV movie. Now, sans, internet that will change, unless we are at my house.

This realist is thankful

Life, to me, seems pretty bleak right now.

I would never call myself an optimist, but I don’t consider myself to be a pessimist, either. To paraphrase the Latin teacher in “Dead Poets Society,” I’m not a cynic but rather a realist.

I call things as I see them, and right now I’m pretty discouraged for a number of reasons I won’t bore you with. That’s why it’s been so hard for me to write this column about what I’m thankful for this year.
