Summer of love is over

Well, I used to love her. It was a very brief affair. I’d call it the summer of love, really. She talked about personal freedoms. Not being sheep. She touted how we were all able to make our own choices. Yes, I saw the signs. But love is so blind, I chose to ignore them. But now she’s shown her true colors. And I don’t like them. As much as I used to think you were a strong, free thinking, personal rights minded, honest politician, I now know you are just another run of the mill politicians. I’m ending my love affair with our governor, Kristi Noem.

‘We need a little Christmas’

I took a stroll down Main Street in Hill City on a recent cloudy, snowy morning, and I saw the first signs of Christmas start to pop up in town. The Alpine Inn was starting to decorate its porch with garland and the Black Hills Institute had a Christmas tree up in its window.

One thing you may not know about me is that I love “Peanuts.”

Yes, I love the nut (or legume or whatever the heck it is), but I’m talking specifically about the comic strip. Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy and the whole Peanuts gang, these are characters that have brought me great joy throughout my life.

So that’s why I was so ticked off to see the recent news about their specials being moved to Apple TV Plus.

If you haven’t flown during the pandemic then I can assure you: you are not missing much! I got to fly the “friendly” skies of Divided last week.

It’s amazing how the airline could take an already stressful and un-fun activity and suck the life out it so badly as to make it 10,000,000 times worse. First because I had the cheapest tier of flight possible I was not allowed to check in online, lest I try to sneak an oversized bag on without paying.

Happy Fall Hill City Community! I know it has been a while since you have heard from me in the paper but that is not for lack of things going on around town! If you have taken an opportunity to attend a City Council meeting you will know that there is added structure and a closer adherence to Robert’s Rules of Order being used to run the meetings.

School year off to good start

This week is the final week of the first quarter, and I have been extremely proud of our students, staff and stakeholders. There has been a lot of noise surrounding public education this year, but the people in our school have stayed focused. It has been a blessing to serve as your superintendent as we implement a common-sense plan for educating our kids during a global pandemic. It has not always been easy, but I think it has created solidarity and unity amongst us. I am grateful for each day we are in school with our students and I hope you feel that way also.

I’ve heard the talk around town about me.

Whenever I talk to people, it’s always mentioned. They bring it up, and I’m more than happy to talk about it because it’s something I’m very open about.

I’m talking, of course, about my weight loss.

I was on the heavier side of things for a long time. I was always one of the “larger” kids in my class despite being one of the shortest (I didn’t really grow until I got to college).

Oh deer...I’m not buying this

How many of us have ever thought we hit a deer and went back the next day to check on it? I would say the answer to that question is pretty darn slim. Yet that’s what our state’s attorney general wants us to believe. And this kind of bothers me...a lot!

Friday was really a busy day

What a day, what a day.

Friday, Sept. 25 was a big day for me. It was my first time covering and attending the annual Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park. And what a day it was.

My day started at 5 a.m. Let me say that again. My day started at 5 a.m. This might not seem early to some of you, but for me, that’s very, very early. Like, it’s been a huge transition for me to wake up at 6:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. like a normal, functioning adult, so 5 a.m. is ridiculous. Anyway, I digress.
