Town votes to approve AUP

The town of Keystone will enter into a contract with Ketel Thorstenson to do an Agreed Upon Procedures (AUP) for the Keystone Area Historical Society (KAHS), according to the most recent town board meeting. The cost of the AUP is $3,500.

According to KAHS board president  Jon Veltman the AUP should be complete by the middle of March. 

Trump family gets formal invitation to Mount Rushmore fireworks

The Trump family has its invitation to attend the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Fireworks scheduled for July 3.

Keystone might get a new tower to help communications with public safety officials.

“We’re here today looking at places where we could put them, “ said Ted Rufledt with Pennington County 911 on a recent visit to Keystone Town Hall.

Council tables sign ordinance first reading

The Hill City Common Council had a busy meeting Monday night, tackling the planned use development (PUD) for the attainable housing project and the Hill City sign ordinance revision.

The council started out by discussing the PUD. The council did not need to approve the PUD, rather, it was discussing six required contributions for the PUD.

“This is the heart of the TIF (tax increment financing district),” said Dani Schade, development service coordinator for Hill City.

Legislators talk issues at crackerbarrel

Six people attended Hill City’s crackerbarrel with guests Sen. Lance Russell and Reps. Julie Frye-Mueller and Tim Goodwin Feb. 8.

Issues discussed centered around hemp legislation, school funding and bills the legislators were sponsoring and about which they felt passionate.

The crackerbarrel started off with remarks from each of the legislators.

“We spent $170 million on a budget,” Russell said. “None of us voted for it.”

Work being done to bring fireworks to Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is still in the process of evaluating holding fireworks there on July 3.

On Jan. 30, Patricia Trap, acting superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Rob Wallace, assistant secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks for the Department of the Interior, and David Vela, acting National Parks Service director, met at Mount Rushmore to discuss the proposal.

Attainable housing takes step forward

The attainable housing project in Hill City took another step forward at Monday’s Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

A public hearing was held to discuss the planned use development (PUD) needed to make the project happen.

“We want families to locate here,” said Dani Schade, development service coordinator for Hill City.

Legislative crackerbarrel Feb. 8

A legislative crackerbarrel will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 8 at the Super 8 Motel conference room in Hill City.

The crackerbarrel will feature District 30 Sen. Lance Russell and Reps. Tim Goodwin and Julie Frye-Mueller, although Frye-Mueller may be unable to attend.

The three represent portions of Custer, Fall River and Pennington counties.

Election season starts in Keystone

Election season has begun in Keystone.

Petitions for two vacant town board seats are now available online or at town hall. The open seats are held by Bill Babcock and Rick Brandfas, neither of whom will run this year. 

Keystone hydrants being flushed

The Keystone public works department is busy flushing fire hydrants as part of its routine maintenance plan.

The most recent round of flushing takes place Feb. 6-7. The department has already flushed lines in two parts of town with no complaints thus far.

“It’s almost impossible to get done in the summer,” said public works superintendent Jerry Przybylski. “We usually flush once or twice a year in the fall and the spring. The flushing stirs up iron in the water.”
