Delores Hoime

Delores “Dee” Julia Hoime was born Dec. 6, 1947, in Pierre, S.D., to George (Ray) Whalen and Bernadette (Moriarty) Whalen.
She attended high school at Mount Marty Academy in Yankton, S.D.  Later she attended Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D., completing her AA degree at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Dee married Tim Hoime Nov. 9, 1985, and together they embarked on a journey that would take them from South Dakota to Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, back to South Dakota and finally to Arizona.
She enjoyed an illustrious career in the insurance industry progressing in responsibility with Iowa National, Tri-State Insurance, United Fire & Casualty and Progressive Insurance. With her husband Tim, she was a partner at Custer Super Valu and Sylvan Lake Resort.
Dee was an exercise fanatic who knew no boundaries. Never was there a time where she wasn’t running, walking, biking, doing aerobics or weight training. She taught aerobics at her own studio in Custer, S.D., where she built a large clientele. She later helped charter the local YMCA merging her studio into a Y program.
Many former students reflect on how the energy and positive vibes of her classes helped them both physically and emotionally during trying times. Dee was a guiding force to many; a planner, a sounding board and mentor.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Dee. She loved board games, theater, golfing, traveling, concerts, sports, gourmet dining, her pets, and a quiet evening with friends…a glass of red wine in hand. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities. Her trademark smile was formidable and contagious to everyone she met.
Dee’s love of life didn’t come to an end with her death, as it continues to radiate in all those who knew her.
Dee passed away May 10, 2021, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer, surrounded by family members who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest. She was 73.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Ray and Bernadette Whalen; and infant son, Scotty Loseth.
Dee is survived by her husband of 36 years, Tim of Gilbert, Ariz.; son, Chad (Anita) of Custer; granddaughter, Shelby of Custer; sister, Colleen (Joe) of Durango, Colo.; brother, Kevin (Teri) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; several cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and many cherished friends.
Today the world is a little duller without her smiling face and giving heart, however, our memories of her will help lessen the loss. There would be no greater tribute to Dee than for us to emulate her spirit of adventure and generosity.  In lieu of flowers, her family is asking that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Caring Bridge.org.
A Celebration of Dee’s Life will be held at 2 p.m., Sept. 12 at the Custer Beacon in Custer.
Some of her ashes will be interned at Custer Cemetery with the remainder scattered at a variety of her favorite places.
