Elections will be sparse this June
The window for the circulation of nominating petitions for the upcoming city and school board elections around Custer County closed March 25, but any petitions recieved through the mail that are postmarked by March 25 could change the results.
In the City of Custer, there are three seats up for election on the city council, including the Ward I seat belonging to Jeannie Fischer, the Ward II seat belonging to Nina Nielsen and the Ward III seat belonging to Peg Ryan. Each position is for a two-year term.
Mayor Bob Brown’s seat is also up for election with a two-year term.
All the incumbents filed petitions. No other petitions were received as of publication, so there will not be an election this year.
The Custer School District Board of Education had two seats up for election. They are currenty held by Michelle Lehman and Heather Grace.
Four verified petitions were returned by Corey Virtue, Brandy Tarap, Jesse Sorenson and Mark W. Perrenoud for the two three-year terms.
After alotting time for any remaining petitions to arrive in the mail, the school district will meet with the City of Custer and Custer County to discuss whether a joint or independent election will take place June 3.
In Hermosa, there are three board of trustee positions available. The positions currently held by Linda Kramer and Donna Ferguson were for three-year terms, and the position currently held by Aaron Serviss was for a one-year term. Serviss was appointed to fill the position of Vicki Hendricksen who resigned last August.
Serviss and Kramer filed petitions for the three-year terms and Ferguson filed for the one-year term.
There will not be an election unless a petition is received in the mail postmarked by March 25. If an election is held, it would be June 3.
Two seats were open in Fairburn for three-year terms and are currently held by Dean Weekley and Melissa Kramer. Petitions were turned in by Weekley and Bradley Mikkelson for the positions.

At the Elk Mountain School District, two board positions were open for election with three-year terms. The seats are currently held by Travis Paulton and Mary Boots.
Both Paulton and Boots returned verified petitions. There will be no election unless a petition is received in the mail postmarked by March 25.
In Pringle, three seats on the town board are up for election. One seat is for a one-year term, one is for a two-year term and one is for a three-year term. Currently, the positions are held by Dee Andersen, who is the chairman or mayor, Pat Zeimet and Tony Boggs.
The results of the nominating petitions were not received by the time of publication.
Finally, in Buffalo Gap, there is a three-year seat available that is currently held by Terry Kizer. A two-year seat is also open. It is currently held by Wendy Ricci who filled out the term of former board president Glenn Scofield, who resigned.
