Get to know your candidates: Keystone

The Hill City Prevailer News asked the two individuals running for the vacant seat on the Keystone Town Board to respond to a questionnaire. Their answers are below. The election will be held April 13.

1) What are your goals for Keystone?

Matthew Fullilove: I have only one main goal for Keystone, which is to find a happy medium between the needs of the businesses and the residents.

Will Parks: My goals for Keystone are to ensure the residents of Keystone have the best possible environment that a town government can provide. They should have the comfort and peace of mind knowing that the town council exists to serve their best interests, that their voice will be heard, and that they get equal and fair representation. Keystone is a beautiful town and a great place to live and it is evident that those employed by the city are dedicated to making sure it stays that way for those who call it home.

2) What do you see as the most important issues facing our town?

Matthew Fullilove: Infrastructure is one of the most important issues facing our town. Parking I would say being one of the most important. There has to be expansion in that respect. Bridges need upgrades. Flood control and pedestrian accommodation are some examples. Many residents want to see Watson Park expanded. A pavilion, band stage are a couple of examples that have been brought up to me.

Will Parks: Keystone should always be cognizant of the environmental threats to the town. Fire prevention and response is a top concern for a forested mountain town and should be a regular discussion point for town meetings. Flood prevention and response is another.

During the tourist season, Keystone is continually challenged with providing parking for the vast number of visitors to the town. New and improved housing has also been a topic of concern for town residents. And, of course, the continued and uninterrupted supply and access of essential services such as electricity, water, sewer, communications, and safety/security personnel.

3) How can you put personal feelings aside to do what’s best for the community?

Matthew Fullilove: I don't own a business nor am I a proxy to anyone or any special interests. I would be beholden only to the voters of Keystone if elected. As a far as any biases or personal feelings I would be the most benign in that category.

Will Parks: I have always adhered to the philosophy of the greater good. Decisions should be made that support the needs of the community as a whole and are in the best interests of the town. A city Councilman’s foremost responsibility is to serve the needs of others.

4) How will you go out into the community so that we can talk to you and see you?

Matthew Fullilove: I have three young children so if there’s an event of any kind going on in Keystone I’m usually there. Whether it’s bingo, skate night, or just taking a stroll on the main strip to the upper mall I’m a familiar face.

Will Parks: I enjoy meeting and talking with all the people in Keystone and getting to know each person. On occasion I can be found walking the shops on main street and talking with the owners and workers. Every Thursday morning at 10:30 I’m at the Catholic Church parking lot, across from city hall, supporting the activities of Feeding South Dakota. I am also accessible at town meetings and encourage everyone to stop and say hello.

I grew up in a small town community like Keystone and enjoyed the relationships, dynamics, and camaraderie that a small town community provides. The people I meet often become friends and I am honored to call them such.
