Gold Discovery Days 2022 is all over but the counting...the counting of awards and prizes from the various weekend events, that is.
Officials of the 12th annual Caroline Hatton Flower Show held at the Custer Senior Center announced on Monday the adult Best of Show winners and Judges’ Choice.
In Class 1, Cut Flowers, Donna Talley was the winner in the category of “other perennial,” peony. Peg Nervig won Best of Show in Class 2, Floral Arrangement with her “God Bless America,” arrangement depicting a patriotic theme. In Class 3, Potted Plants, Liz Meyer took Best of Show with her African Violet house plant in bloom.
The winner of the Judges’ Choice award was Linda Markegard for her delphinium cut flowers. There were a total of 61 entries from 17 adults but to the organizers’ disappointment there were no youth entries this year.
The winners of the Saturday afternoon Cornhole Tournament at Mt. Rushmore Brewing Co. were listed as the team of Ronnie and Keaten from Sioux Falls. Coming in second were Ethan from Sioux Falls and Bailey from Chadron, Neb. The event raised $640 for the Custer YMCA.
The annual volleyball tournament also took place on Saturday and the winning team was Turdhurst, consisting of Vaughn Ziolkowski, Caleb Ziolkowski, Isaac Parsons and Jayden Baxter. Second place went to the Blundercats. Team members were Jim Meyer, Emily Meyer, Micaiah Grace and Mikael Grace. Six teams participated in the tourney.
Prizes were awarded on Saturday afternoon to participants in the annual Bob Plaisted Memorial Car Show held on west Washington Street. The winners were chosen from over 100 entries.
Jared Bloomgren won the Spectators’ Choice award with his 1965 Ford F-150 (Entry No. 92). The Best of Show Stock Car award went to Warren Pfenning and his 1968 RS/SS Camaro (No. 29) and the Best of Show Modified Car award went to Mike Christopher for his 1972 Nova (No. 91).
The award for the Best Stock Truck went to the 1933 Dodge (No. 78) owned by Terry Downing and the award for the Best Modified Truck went to Mike Schaffer for his 1970 Chevy C-10 (No. 50)
The award for the Best Motorcycle went to Mick and Sherri McDermet for their 1948 Indian (No. 52). The Bill Naugle award was presented to Frank Sutterfield’s 1965 Malibu SS (No. 42)
The Carol Plaisted award was won by Jerry Lindholm for his 1956 Chevy Bel Air (No. 20).
The Mayor’s Choice award was presented to Carson Glodt and his 1965 Chevy truck (No. 80).
The Sheriff’s Choice award went to Lane & Marcia Anderson and their 1934 Ford Deluxe (No. 77) and Todd Heuer won the award for the Best In Progress for his Rat Rod 1929 Model A Ford (No. 55). A large number of runners of all ages participated in Sunday’s Gold Rush 5K on the Mickelson Trail.
Custer High School’s Ramsey Karim was the top female runner with a time of 19 minutes, 12 seconds and Jake Warden of Amarillo, Texas, running in the men’s 18-29 division was first overall among male runners with a time of 17:07.
Sierra Swanson was second among the high school girls with a time of 23 minutes flat. She was followed by Keira Alfson (23:01) and Quinn Lewison (29:49).
Gage Grohs was the winner among the high school boys with a time of 17:13, which was a full three minutes faster than second place runner Kai Rusch (20:21). They were followed by Kian Rusch (20:53), Ethan O’Connor (22:29), Kody Marshall (22:38), Saylor Rice (23:58) and Troy Searle of Greer, S.C. who ran the course in 35:56.
Israel Parsons of Portland, Ore. came in second in the men’s 18-29 division with a time of 21:24 and Logan Bauer of Owatonna, Minn. was third (28:11).
Kadense Dooley was the winner among the women’s 18-29 runners with a time of 21:11 and she was followed by Laura Parsons of Portland, Ore. (23:28) and Anna Peachey of Summerset (38:15).
Isaac Parsons was the front runner among men aged 30-39, running the 5K in 20:52. Other participants in his age group were Luke Hittner (22:11), Tyler Mire of Woodridge, Va. (23:15) and William Roberts of Hot Springs (24:40).
The lone female runner in that age bracket was Kelsey Mire of Lake Ridge, Va., who finished in 43:24.
In the men’s 40-49 age group, Eric Reynolds was the winner with a time of 27:07. In second was Jason Searle of Greer, S.C. (31:07) and Jeremiah Keller (38:39) came in third. There were no women in the 40-49 division.
Just Scott and Jay Gismondi were the only runners in the men’s 50-59 division. Scott finished in 27:39 and Gismondi had a time of 36:54.
Shawn Loy of Hudson, Wisc. was the lone woman runner in that age group. She finished in 26:19.
Kurt Jaehn was the winner of the men’s age 60-69 category with a time of 24:24 he was followed by Duane Weber (31:02).
The only female runner in that age group was Reda Chambers who finished in 42:58.
Elisha Ziolkowski was the winner of the boys elementary division with a time of 42 minutes, 30 seconds and Evelyn and Izabel Jeleniowski took first and second in the girls elementary group with times of 29:01 and 39:42.
Mattea Marshall was the winner of the girls junior high division with a time of 24:41 and Myah Keller was second, running the race in 38:39.
Austin Drew had the best time among the junior high boys with a time of 22:04.
Non-timed participants in the Fun Run included Charity Ziolkowski, Graydon Fritz, Katelyn Fritz, Gabe Ziolkowski, Bart Coleman, Todd Ackerman of Whitewood, Mark Loy of Hudson, Wisc., Kelly Jaehn, Rachel Ackerman of Whitewood, Kathy Young, Chuck Wolfe of Rapid City, Dave Versteeg, Patrick Bauman, Brenda Versteeg, Bill Young, Wyatt Dooley, Eleisha Dooley, Terri Herman, Corbin Herman, Chandler Bauer of Owatonna, Minn., Stacey Bauer of Owatonna, Minn., Sydney Hickman and Brenda Patzlaff. Unless otherwise noted all runners were from Custer.
