Kenneth Zumbaum
Kenneth K. Zumbaum was born March 25, 1939, in New Underwood, S.D., to William and Lyndall (Asbrock) Zumbaum.
He graduated from Galatia High School in Illinois in 1956 and proudly enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1956 and served until his honorable discharge in 1962.
Kenneth was a Mason, member of American Morgan Horses and a lifetime member of the VFW. His career started with the Burlington Northern Railroad until he settled in Custer, S.D., where he delivered propane and later worked at Custer State Game Lodge.
Kenneth married Catherine Sept. 28, 1996, in Pringle, S.D.
He enjoyed his ranch, raising Morgan horses, caring for numerous other animals, playing cards with friends and catching all the local gossip. Kenneth was friendly to everyone he met and he never met a person who wasn’t a friend in waiting! A hard working man he was and he dedicated himself to any profession he tackled. He was a constant “fixer” who took on any job that needed to be done.
Kenneth, of Custer, passed away at his home Oct. 14, 2023. He was 84.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine of Custer; son, Joshua Godfrey of Rapid City, S.D.; daughter, Heather (Troy) Merchen of Newcastle, Wyo.; Rebecca and Christopher, adopted children, and stepdaughter, Jennifer Little from previous marriages; many grandchildren; and one great- granddaughter.
A celebration of Kenneth’s life will be held from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Pine Room in the Custer County Courthouse Annex in Custer. Please join the family for refreshments and a time of sharing.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColleys Funeral Home in Custer.
