The Deadwood Trust for Historic  Preservation  awarded  a $5,000 grant to the Keystone Museum for its chimney repair.
According to museum director Casey Sullivan employees and board members noticed about six or seven months ago that the chimney was starting to fall apart. Although not certain that the chimney issues were related to the leaks noticed in the building, the chimney was covered with a tarp as a precaution and there have been no obvious leaks since.
Three members of the trust, Bonnie Anfinson, Beverly Posey and Robin Carmody, came to the museum to present the check.
The Keystone Museum has received six out of seven grants it has applied for totaling $62,412.85.
It is unclear when the repairs to the museum’s chimney will be completed as it is still looking for a contractor to do this sort of brick masonry work.
Deb Dargatz, president of the Keystone Area Historical Society, thanked the trust by saying, “we are so grateful to the Deadwood  Trust for Historic Preservation for generously providing this $5,000 check toward the chimney to keep the building in good shape for many years to come.”
Repairs to the museum roof itself will be covered partially by insurance.
According to Keystone finance officer Cassandra Ott, “the insurance company is giving us about $40,000 and they are only covering the cost of replacing two sides of the roof. They can verify those two sides were damaged by hail.”
This has been corroborated by the town’s engineer.  The town is checking with the state historical society and the insurance company to see what materials it can use  on the roof that may be longer lasting, more hail resistant as well as  more fire retardant.
