Memorial Day activities planned

A pared-down slate of Memorial Day activities will take place this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following is a schedule of events set for the day, Monday, May 25.
On Friday, Custer American Legion Post 46 members will decorate the graves of service members at Custer Cemetery beginning at 5 p.m. The Legion is typically joined by a host of other entities for this event, but that will not be the case this year.
Friday is also the day a wreath will be laid on the grave of Myron Shade at the Hot Springs VA Cemetery. Shade was the first commander of the state American Legion and first superintendent of Custer State Park. While living in the park, he lived where Legion Lake Lodge is now.
On Memorial Day, events will start with the Hermosa American Legion Post 303 decorating graves at Hermosa Cemetery at 6 a.m. That will be followed by the flags at Way Park and Custer Cemetery lowered to half-mast by Custer American Legion and Custer VFW Post 3442, respectively, at 8 a.m.
Also at 8 a.m., Memorial Day ceremonies will take place at Fairburn Cemetery, followed by ceremonies at Hermosa Cemetery at 9 a.m.
At noon on Memorial Day, Custer American Legion and Custer VFW will re-raise the colors at Way Park and Custer Cemetery.
The memorial ceremonies at the Cold Springs, Pringle and Custer City cemeteries have been cancelled, as has the annual luncheons at the Custer VFW and Hermosa American Legion Hall.
