Nathan Steele joins Chronicle staff

Custer native Nathan Steele is the newest addition to the Custer County Chronicle staff.
After graduating from Custer High School in 2019, he left to continue his education at the University of Wyoming. For most of his college days, Steele studied English and Secondary Education but after deciding not to pursue a career in the education field, he graduated with a degree in English.
Steele learned about the job posting from his parents Rob and Cheryl Steele, who encouraged him to apply. He is joining as a reporter and will cover school activities, school board and some sports, among other assignments.
Outside of the school year, people may have gotten to know Steele from his previous involvement around Custer—as a server at the Custer Wolf, lifeguard and swim lessons teacher at the city pool, ice cream scooper at his family’s business Horatio’s Homemade Ice Cream or from varied activities in Custer High School. He participated in cross country, band, choir, drama and Knowledge Bowl and is most excited to cover school events for the Chronicle.
“It’s cool to think that I will be able to reach a lot of the people I’ve grown up around in this position, but I also feel the added pressure to do a good job for that same reason,” he said.
Steele is joining the team as a reporter and is excited about this opportunity to stay in his hometown, saying, “I know people aren’t supposed to like their hometowns, but I can’t help it. The people are great here, and there’s nothing like being able to go on a hike straight from your front door.”
Steele has been a reader of the Chronicle since he could read and looks forward to getting to work in journalism with his hometown paper.
“I’m most excited to learn in this position. The Chronicle was the first newspaper I ever read, and I’ve even had the pleasure of being in it a few times,” he said, “so I’m eager to gain experience and do my best for the good people in the area.”
“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Nathan to our staff,” Chronicle general manager Jason Ferguson said. “He knows the town, knows the people and we have no doubt he’ll do a great job. He’s a great addition to our staff.”
