Officer-involved shooting being investigated

A Jan. 3 shooting of a citizen by an Custer County Sheriff’s Office deputy is being investigated by the The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
On that evening, at approximately 9:17 p.m., a deputy responded to a residence in the City of Custer after a female called 911  to request help. The call was disconnected before further information could be obtained.
After knocking and announcing himself, the deputy was met at the door by the adult female caller and was ushered into the residence. After entering the residence, an adult male presented himself holding a firearm. After being directed by the deputy and the female caller to drop the firearm, the male raised and pointed the firearm at the deputy. The deputy then discharged his duty weapon and shot the male. Deputies provided medical care to the male until the ambulance arrived. The male was transported to Monument Health Hospital.
DCI and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to conduct the investigation into the incident. Body camera footage of the incident has been provided to the investigating agency.
The deputy, who was uninjured, has been placed on administrative leave pursuant to policy. More information on this incident will be reported as details become available.
