Petitions available for elections

It’s petition time in Custer County, as election petitions can now be pulled for a variety of offices and seats around the county, including school board, the various town councils and multiple offices at the county level.
At the county level, there are four seats on the county commission that will be up for election, which belong to Craig Hindle, Mike Linde, Jim Lintz and Travis Bies. The seats currently belonging to Hindle, Linde and Lintz are all four-year terms, while Bies’ is a two-year term, as he was appointed to the position after being elected due to an oath of office snafu.
The county’s newest position, finance officer, will be elected for the first time to a four-year term, and the county Register of Deeds position (four-year term) and sheriff position (four-year term) are also set to be contested.
The deadline for filing nominating petitions for the primary election is March 29 at 4 p.m. at the Custer County Auditor’s Office. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by March 29 at 4 p.m. it shall be considered filed.
The deadline for filing nominating petitions to run as an independent candidate in the general election is April 26 at 4 p.m. central time.
The Custer School District Board of Education will have two seats coming up, those that currently belong to Heather Grace and Michelle Lehman. Those seats are for a three-year term.
Circulation of nominating petitions may be filed in the office of the Custer County Auditor between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Petitions must be filed no later than Tuesday, March 29 at 5 p.m. or mailed by registered mail no later than March 29 at the same time.
The City of Custer will have three seats available, one in each ward. In Ward I, the seat belonging to Dixie Whittaker is available, as is the Ward II seat occupied by Julie Jenniges and the Ward III seat occupied by Todd Pechota. All three seats are for a two-year term.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1 and petitions may be filed in the office of the finance officer located at Custer City Finance Office located at Custer City Hall, 622 Crook Street Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  and no later than 5 p.m.  March 29 or mailed by registered mail no later than 5 p.m. that same day.
The Town of Hermosa has two three-year term seats coming available, those currently belonging to Berni Flug and Bob King.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1. Petitions may be filed with the finance officer located at the Hermosa Town Office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Monday through Friday and no later than 5 p.m. March 29.
The Elk Mountain School District Board of Education has five seats coming open, including the seats belonging to:
• Travis Paulton - three-year term
• Susan Anderson - three-year term
• Mary Boots - three-year term
• Joann Boggs - two-year term
• Ken Keidel - one-year term
Circulation of nominating petitions began  March 1. Petitions may be filed in the office of the Elk Mountain School business manager located at 10222 Valley Road in Dewey between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Petitions must be filed no later than March 29 at 5 p.m. or mailed to Elk Mountain School by registered mail no later than 5 p.m. that same day.  For questions contact the business office at 605-749-2258.
The Town of Buffalo Gap has one seat coming open, that belonging to Terry Kizer, for a three-year term. Petitions could be pulled Jan. 31st for that position and had to be filed no later than Feb. 27.
In Fairburn, there is a seat coming open for a three-year term, which currently belongs to Melissa Kremer.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1 and petitions may be filed in the office of the finance officer located at 110 Lynn St. between the hours of 4-5 p.m. on March 29 or between 7-7:30 p.m. March 14 or March 16. Petitions may be submitted by registered mail if postmarked by the deadline date of March 29.
District 30 representation will be decided again this year, as the District 30 Senate seat currently occupied by Julie Frye-Mueller is up for election, as are the seats belonging to Reps. Tim Goodwin and Trish Ladner. All seats are two-year terms.
Other offices to be decided this year include United States Senator, United States Representative, governor/Lt. governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, Commissioner of School and Public Lands, Public Utilities Commissioner and   Third Circuit Court judge. These petitions must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building in Pierre between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central Time
