Studebakers return to Custer this weekend

Studebaker cars and trucks will return to the Custer this Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1-3.
Members of the Dakotas Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club will host several events, including an outdoor car show on 6th Street adjacent to Rushmore Road Sunday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event is free to the public, who can vote for their favorite vehicle.  Twenty-five owners of cars and trucks manufactured from the 1930s through 1964 have already indicated they will bring their vehicles. Several more are expected to participate.
A variety of models of Studebakers will be shown by members from South Dakota, six other states and Canada. Several cars have previously won awards at the International Studebaker shows or the recent Oahe Dam Run car festival. It is expected there will be both restored and modified models including the well known Hawk and Avanti styles. Several members will drive their convertibles.
Registration and an outdoor reception at the host hotel, Super 8, will kick-off the events Friday evening.  A large tent on loan from  Dacotah Bank will be erected nearby and used in case of inclement weather.
The participants will take a cruise to four of the lakes in the Black Hills on Saturday and will return that afternoon to Custer to see the sights and dine. The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce has assisted the group with arrangements and will be giving one of the several awards Sunday night at the banquet for participants, which is the final event.
