Wayne Hauschildt

Wayne Henry Hauschildt was born in Saint Paul, Minn. The third of three children, he lived in West St. Paul Minn.
Since the age of 10, Wayne pumped gas at his father’s filling station in West Saint Paul and fell in love with fast cars.
Wayne played football and tennis graduating from Humboldt High Cchool in 1958. Because he loved to build and break things, in 1958 he turned this passion into a career at West Publishing Company.
The year 1958 brought other changes to Wayne’s life, including getting married to Betty Steiner and joining the Army.
In 1961 Wayne became a father to daughter Laurie Ann. Then in 1965 they saw the arrival of Wayne’s second daughter, Lisa Rae.
Wayne moved the family from West Saint Paul to Eagan Township, Minn., in 1969 and welcomed the arrival of his third child, son, John Wayne.
Wayne enjoyed summertime adventures at Love Lake in Wisconsin, where he taught the family to waterski and fish. In 1978 Wayne built his first house in Eagan Minn., with his own hands. There the family lived until moving to Rosemount Minnesota in 1983. After his children graduated high school, Wayne divorced and moved back to Eagan.
Wayne continued to advance his career at West Publishing, becoming a supervisor of the machinists he worked with. Wayne never lost his joy for tinkering or love of the water. He built a boat with a car engine and was known to waterski up and down the Mississippi River alongside the barges.
In 1994 Wayne met Patti at West Publishing. It did not take long for them to fall in love and share that love of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Wayne and Patti were married in 1995 when Wayne retired from West Publishing that same year.
On June 1, 1997, Wayne and Patti moved out west to Custer, S.D., where they built another house with their own hands. When he was not traveling, mowing his lawn or making custom wood crafts for his family you could find Wayne on the trails or in the backcountry riding horses and ATVs chasing the view over the next hill. When Wayne got to the top of that next hill, he always threw a rock over the edge into the unknown.
