New food service director at school

The Custer School District has an almost-entirely new cafeteria team this year led by Erica Layton, the new food service director through Lunchtime Solutions.
Layton and her husband lived in South Dakota for a time before moving to Alaska and later Arizona. However, they always wanted to come back.
“Out of every place we lived, this is our favorite,”  Layton said. “This is home.”

Noem opens call to student artists

In celebration of National Arts in Education Week Gov. Kristi Noem and the South Dakota Arts Council announced the opening of the Governor’s Student Art Competition.
 
All South Dakota students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate in this program. Selected student work from four age divisions will be exhibited in the state capitol building in Pierre from January through September 2023. 
 

Sanders receives garden club scholarship

“Being a sixth-generation agriculturist has allowed me to become committed to the industry with such passion,” said Megan Sanders. Sanders is the 2022 Custer Mile High Garden Club (Garden Club) Scholarship recipient. “Growing up on my family’s operation has shown me the hard work and dedication put forward by the past generations, and I want to continue that [commitment].”
A Hot Springs High School graduate, Sanders is attending South Dakota State University (SDSU) for a Bachelors in  Agricultural Education.

4-H projects on display at courthouse

The National 4-H Mission is to give all young people access to opportunity, and access to opportunity is what is happening in the Southern Hills of South Dakota, 4-H officials say.
4-H is all about empowering youth with the skills to lead for a lifetime through hands-on projects. An excellent selection of these projects is on display at the Custer County Courthouse Art Gallery, 420 Mount Rushmore Road, through September during regular business hours.   

Woodward has big bull riding dreams

Jestyn Woodward is an 18-year-old bull rider from Custer who is competing on a large scale.
Woodward recently (Aug. 6) placed first, earning $2,428 and 87 points, at an Ashley, N.D., rodeo riding Mosbrucker’s bull House Cat.     
Woodward qualifies for a PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) card as he has won more than the required $1,200.
Yet, Woodward has chosen to remain on his bull-riding permit as an avid competitor, preparing until he feels “at a level to get to the NFR (National Finals Rodeo),” Woodward said.  

Custer School District welcomes new teachers

Students in Custer and Hermosa are returning to school Wednesday, Aug. 24, and joining them are nine certified teachers instructing for the first time with Custer School District.
Most of this new teaching staff isn’t new to Custer, nor the Black Hills. New special education (SPED) teacher Shayna Kintigh graduated from Custer High School and will be starting her teaching career as Hermosa’s K-3 SPED teacher this year.

Arengo attends Army Airborne School

U.S. Army Corporal Jericho L. Arengo, a 2017 Custer High School graduate, recently traveled to Ft. Benning, Ga., from his post at Ft. Bragg, N.C. to attend the U.S. Army’s Airborne School.
The school, also known as “Jump School,” consists of three weeks of intense training beginning with “Ground Week,” where prospective paratroopers learn the basics of the US Army’s T-10D and T-11 parachutes, how to land properly and general jump procedures.

Custer CAP named top state squadron

Crazy Horse Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol of Custer was named South Dakota Squadron of the Year at the 2022 South Dakota Wing Conference.  The award recognizes holistic support for the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) missions within the state.
“Crazy Horse Composite Squadron received this award because of the broad support members give to the programs of CAP,” said Col. Michael Marek, CAP commander for the South Dakota Wing. “They are professional, enthusiastic, and highly respected in our South Dakota Civil Air Patrol family.”

Preble to be at youth leadership forum

This summer Marika Preble, a junior at Custer High School, will join high school students from across the nation to take part in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience, NYLF: National Security in Washington, D.C. in July.
NYLF is one of the Envision by World Strides family of programs (envisionexperience.com) that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.
