That’s a wrap for the football season

For the second year in a row the Hill City Rangers football team went on to post regular season play.
The 2025-26 team set some individual as well season and game records. This is the first time in the history of Ranger football that the Rangers have made the second round of the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Head football coach Brett Eckert called the accomplishment huge, giving credit to this year’s senior players whose “leadership has brought about a change in the culture of Hill City Football.” 

Ranger volleyball season comes to an end

The Hill City Rangers opened their post-season volleyball run last Tuesday night in the Region 8 quarterfinals against the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers—a make-or-break matchup determining who would advance to the semifinals.
Hill City came out strong, fueled by sharp serving by Grace Peckosh, powerful hitting by Demi Schrier and Carlie Hobbick and a gritty defensive hustle. Hill City quickly jumped to an 11-1 lead before a shift in momentum and a string of errors by the Rangers let the Golddiggers back in the door as they chipped away at the deficit.

Rangers stampede Broncs on senior night

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team defended its home court in the last regular season game against the Belle Fourche Broncs last Tuesday. Senior night was also celebrated with the volleyball team sharing the spotlight with the cross country team, honoring their seniors and celebrating their success at the state meet. 
The Rangers played all seven of their seniors for the match-up, hit the floor running and never looked back.

Hamlin charges past Hill City Rangers

The Hill City Rangers kicked off first in the quarterfinal of the Class 9AA playoffs against the Hamlin Chargers. 
Hamlin moved the ball quickly through a series of mostly passes, with Charger senior Aiden Abraham scoring first in the game. With 9:02 left in the first quarter, Hamlin was up 8-0 against the Rangers. 

Hill City Rangers rally a win vs rival Custer Wildcats

Rivalries aside, the Hill City Rangers and Custer Wildcats came together for a greater cause last Tuesday. Both teams set aside their school colors to sport pink jerseys for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Custer’s home crowd brought the noise and energy, packing the gym and putting the Rangers focus to the test. 

Ranger boys take second at state

The Hill City cross country teams had a successful weekend at the state cross country meet in Huron Saturday, taking a state championship title as well as several all-state qualifying finishes.

Rangers reduce Panthers to feeble felines

The Hill City Rangers football team is advancing to the Class 9AA State Quarterfinals after a decisive 53-0 win at home against the Great Plains Lutheran Panthers Oct. 23.
The Thursday evening game began with the Rangers kicking off. Mason Wiese set the tone of the game with a quick tackle, setting the Panthers back two yards from the line of scrimmage. A long Panthers run threatened the Rangers but was stopped by Drake Wilkison. The Panthers did make it into the end zone, but a holding call brought  the play back, setting up third and 10.

Hill City Rangers football fans hear the familiar voice announcing everything from players to fundraisers to how to support the booster club at each home game. 
That voice belongs to John Knapp, who sits perched above the 50 yard line of Ranger Field in the announcer’s stand, referred to as the crow’s nest. 
Knapp was the game announcer for 37 years,  although not continuously. He had a 33-year stint, then a job that prevented him from making the start of the games, and has now been back at it the last four years. 

Cross country teams carry the torch to state

It was a rainy, cold and dreary day at Hart Ranch  for the Region 5A Cross Country Meet Thursday, but both teams came away walking on sunshine.
Using the momentum from their second place team finish at the Black Hills Conference meet, the girls team pushed themselves to new limits to become the Region 5A champions and setting several personal and season records.

Ranger volleyball wins one, loses one at home

The Hill City High School volleyball team went head to head against St. Thomas More (STM) last Tuesday night in the Gins Gym for a volleyball match-up. 
It was a hard-fought battle that stretched five sets of volleyball action. 
St. Thomas More came out strong in the first set, hanging onto the lead throughout, ending 25-17.
