Paying it forward with the Pillar Project

The Jewel of the West Pillar Project is a local initiative founded by Stevie Cummins, inspired by her personal journey of overcoming adversity and her deep gratitude for those who supported her during life’s most challenging moments.
As a young single mother, Cummins recalls facing significant financial hardships and the support she received to make it through. 

Smoking good time to be had at senior center

The Stars and Stripes Alliance is holding a BBQ fundraiser for the Keystone Senior Center and Social Club. The April 18 event will feature smoked ribs, brisket and pulled pork as well as beans, macaroni and cheese and desserts. 
“We’ve dabbled in smoked meats for some time,” said Paula Cottrell, board president of the Keystone Senior Center  and Stars and Stripes Alliance board member. 
The group uses a natural gravity fed professional smoker that uses wood and charcoal and a special blend of spices to create meats “made with love,” Cottrell said.

Community garden hopes to be in full bloom

The Hill City Community Garden would like to invite the public to attend its annual meeting and seed swap potluck April 14 at 5 p.m. at the Community Lutheran Church. 
The community garden is sponsored by the Community Lutheran Church but isn’t just for members. 
“It’s for anyone in the area,” according to Jeff Schlukebier. 
The garden is host to around 16 plots averaging 20 square-feet. Plants, vegetables and even flowers are welcome. 
“Hopefully we can fill all the spots this year,” said Schlukebier.

The Famer’s Daughter voted South Dakota’s favorite quilt shop

In an annual online voting contest sponsored by byannie.com, The Farmer’s Daughter in Hill City came in number one and earned the title of South Dakota’s favorite quilt shop. 
Each year, quilters from across the country vote for their favorite quilt shop. Grand prizes are given to the top quilt shop from each of the 50 states as well as regional winners. 
Lorena Freis, owner of The Farmer’s Daughter, was pleasantly surprised by this year’s victory.

Eggciting Easter hunts coming up

This year’s Easter egg hunts have been announced. Hill City is hosting its hunt at the Visitor Information Center March 28. The free event runs from 9:45 a.m. to noon.
The Easter egg hunt starts at 10 a.m., with line-up starting at 9:45 a.m. There will be three special golden eggs, one for each age group. They are among the regular candy-filled eggs in each group’s hunt.  

Keystone gears up for decorating bingo, challenges Hill City to join in

“Bigger than turkey bingo.” 
That’s how Keystone city clerk Candace Lorimor described the upcoming March 28 ham bingo, with proceeds benefiting the Independence Day townwide decorating contest. 
What started as an idea by Keystone Public Works supervisor and town resident Jerry Przybylski has grown into a well-supported fun community event. Przybylski came up with a business decorating contest at one of the first 250th birthday meetings and immediately began to collect prize money donations.
