Film crew features property owner in Keystone

There is an episode from Dubai. There is one from Cabo San Lucas. And soon there will be one from Keystone. 
“Staycation,” an award winning travel series from The Destination Channel came to Keystone July 17 to feature the unique properties of Svenmar Rentals, owned and managed by Casey McNulty.
Staycation airs nationwide on CBS and will eventually end up on livestream to Amazon, Roku and Pluto. 
“It starts local because that’s where the heart of the story is,” said Evan Michael, host and executive producer, who is based out of Los Angeles. 

Come party in the park July 26

A Heart For The Parks board is ready to party and hopes the community will join them this Sunday, July 26, from 1-5 p.m. for  Party in the Park, a fundraiser for ongoing park projects. 
The family-friendly community event will feature food, games, a silent auction and live entertainment.
Headlining the event is Las Vegas vocalist and Hill City alumni Dayna (Collins) Tully who will perform throughout the afternoon.

If your weekend plans seem a little foul, step up your game Friday night at Halley’s 1880 Store where the action is sure to be a slam dunk for the whole family at the Hill City girls basketball third annual fundraiser. 
The fun tips off Friday, July 24, at 6 p.m. at Halley’s 1880 Store in Keystone where the team is geared up to take the floor—the dining floor, that is—serving up Halley’s self-proclaimed “worldish-famous okay-est burgers,” and crispy hand-cut fries.

— The Mayor’s Award of Excellence was handed out at the July 12 Hill City Common Council Meeting. Mayor Kathy Skorzewski presented the award to  Ranae Schrier saying, “this particular person is someone who lives, breathes, eats and sleeps Hill City.” The Mayor’s Award of Excellence for a city staff  member contribution went to account clerk Betsy Brose.

Hill City seeks Hallmark Christmas cinema

Hallmark Channel is looking for the merriest Christmas towns across America, and Hill City could be one of them. 
In a nationwide promotion to celebrate Hallmark’s 25th birthday, the channel is in search of 25 towns that are known for making spirits bright. Communities can be nominated based on how well they embody the warmth, traditions and community spirit that define a classic Hallmark Christmas Movie, and one lucky winner will be featured in one.

Bicentennial quilt on display at VIC

In 1976, Mildred Coates’ fourth-grade class at Hill City Elementary School created a patriotic quilt to commemorate the nation’s bicentennial. Now, 50 years later, it is on display at the Hill City Visitor Information Center (VIC) in celebration of this year’s semiquincentennial. 
The idea for the quilt came from Coates, according to Sue Anderson.
“My oldest daughter Michelle (Minnie), was in the fourth grade when we moved here. Her teacher Mildred Coates started this quilt,” she said.

— The Pennington County Planning and Zoning Commission took a hard stance toward nightly vacation rentals by tabling a request for a conditional use permit for an application at 760 Bishop Mountain Rd. The move came at its July 6 meeting. However, a subsequent motion by Rollie Noem ultimately granted the application begging the question of “with the ordinances as they are right now, does this request violate them?” Noem went so far as to ask the commission if what they are really after is a moratorium, not a change in the town’s ordinances.
