For more than 25 years, Hill City has celebrated the patience, craftsmanship, stories and people behind ordinary pieces of fabric becoming extraordinary works of art at the Hill City Quilt and Fiber Show. 
This Sept. 12-13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gins Gym, the Heart of the Hills Quilters are once again putting the spotlight on the artistry and people behind the stitches.
Now in its 27th year, the show has grown from a small outdoor display of quilts into an event that brings makers and visitors together from throughout the Black Hills and beyond. 

Ride, roam, repeat at Buffalo 50

On Sept. 12, with the crack of a whip, the second annual Buffalo 50 mountain bike race will send cyclists sprinting from Granite Sports into the rugged terrain of the Black Hills where 50 miles of dirt, rock, climbs and descents will await those brave enough to take on the challenge. 
“You aren’t just signing up for a bike race—you are stepping into a raw, rugged endurance playground,” according to organizer John Richards’ ‘The Ultimate Adventurer’s Guide to the Buffalo 50.’

Meet the newest Hill City teachers

Five new teachers joined the Hill City School District staff this year. We reached out to all of them to learn more about who they are and what they will be teaching.
Two teachers are brand new to teaching. Lexi Johnson is one of them and will teach fourth and fifth grade special education. Johnson went to Black Hills State University, and just  graduated in May. 
“I absolutely love the ‘aha’ moments, the look a student gets when they finally understand what you are teaching,” Johnson said about teaching her subject matter. 

Mayor nominated for Spirit of Dakota Award

Hill City Mayor Tana Nichols was nominated for the Spirit of Dakota award, a prestigious award honoring an outstanding South Dakota woman. 
The award is in its 40th year and is given to a woman who has deep South Dakota roots and demonstrates leadership in her state or community. 
This is the second time Nichols has been nominated for the award, although she did not win in the previous nomination.

Nonprofit strives to be PALS to veterans

A local nonprofit organization is endeavoring to be PALS to veterans at the Hot Springs VA Medical Center and the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota State Veterans Home. 
PALS’, or the Patriotic Alliance of Loyal Service’s, mission is to make a better community for veterans and their families by working to assist other veteran organizations in filling the gap for needs.

250th exhibit traces state history

The Great American State Fair was held from June 25 through July 10 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event spanned from the Capitol to the Washington Monument and had exhibits, live music, a ferris wheel, a rodeo and exhibits from states and territories. 

Age Well studio offers affordable aesthetics

Age Well Studio officially opened its doors Sept. 1, sharing a location with b.Well Chiropractic at suite 8 in the Old World Plaza.
Age Well Studio is owned and operated by Casey Richards, a board certified Adult-Geriatric Nurse Practitioner for over a decade. 
Richards created Age Well Studio to, “provide personalized, affordable aesthetic and wellness care with a focus on safety, natural results and treatments tailored to each individual,” she said.
