Every year as the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup approaches an important debate begins.
North or south?
For once, we aren’t arguing politics, simply which viewing area offers the best experience for one of South Dakota’s most spectacular traditions.
Choosing between the two takes careful consideration. Both offer a unique perspective of an incredible display of horsemanship and the awe-inspiring sight of thousands of buffalo thundering over the hills. 
However, I’ve come to a somewhat biased conclusion.

Honoring our veterans

On Sept. 11 we met at the Veterans Home in Hot Springs, and took 32 veterans on the ride of their lives!
We had side-by-sides in two- four-, and six-seat configurations, but when we came up one vehicle short, Adventure Rentals from Custer generously stepped up and loaned us a six-seater for the day. That kind of generosity made it possible for every veteran to have a seat.

Greetings. Happy election season again! Yep, you can vote early now at your county courthouse during normal business hours. Early voting goes until Nov. 2 with regular election on Nov. 3. This election is called the General Election, meaning it’s the final election and we vote for each party’s candidates, democrat and republican. If there are independent candidates, they will also be on our ballot.
This election we have four ballot measure that the public gets to decide. I should qualify that—the public that shows up to vote—gets to decide. The four ballot measures are:

It’s somewhat of a tired cliche, but it remains true—the only constant is change.
Such is the case at the Hill City Prevailer, where we are now at a time of transition. For the last few weeks, we are sure you have noticed (or at least, we hope you have) the help wanted ad we have been running both in this newspaper as well as the Western Trader. That’s because we are an employee down right now.

Twenty-five years ago, the United States of America experienced one of our most horrific tragedies. Our nation was attacked by terrorists—enemies who hate us because of what we stand for. America is the only nation founded on the principle of freedom, and those terrorists despised that fact.
In their hatred, they sought to tear us apart. They failed. In fact, their attempt backfired.

Greetings. Well, as promised, I’m reporting back regarding feedback from the license plate issue. The question asked was, “Would you prefer only one plate on the back of the vehicle or to stay with the current system of two license plates, front and back?”

Just the other day, I asked a friend, if they could change their name, what they would change it to? He said he’d choose Theodore. I told him I would be Orianna Josephine, or Josie for short. The full name would give me my dad’s initials. When I was a kid, I wanted to be Bobbie Jo. It is interesting to me how I have chosen boys names, which is one of the reasons I never liked my name in the first place, since I have heard Leslie used for men as much as women.

WNBA air balled an opportunity

Like many young girls, I used to dream of one day playing in the WNBA. 
It wasn’t a realistic goal for me, but the love and passion for the game was there. Getting to play your favorite sport and get paid to do it—does it really get any better than that?
To be honest, after my basketball career ended in high school, I didn’t give much more thought to the WNBA. I didn’t watch games, didn’t follow the wins and losses. On a good day, I probably could have named three players.
And I wasn’t alone.

And just like that, it’s as if someone turned off a faucet and most of the bikers and tourists have left for the season. 
The days are getting shorter (well they are still 24 hours). The nights are getting cooler. And the big yellow buses are starting to drive down our roads and highways.
