— The North Pole Fire was reported Tuesday, March 10, at 4 p.m., located in the area of Highway 16 and Renegade Road west of Custer. What started as a small grass fire in private property quickly grew to 59 acres on Forest Service land, threatening structures, life and natural resources. Over 60 personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, Custer Volunteer Fire Department and South Dakota Wildland Fire Division worked to contain the blaze. The fire burned both private property and U.S. Forest Service land. It was contained Thursday, March 12.
