Visitor rules changed by Monument

Beginning last week, hospitalized patients at Monument Health will be able to have two visitors, one of which can be a child accompanied by an adult.
Children must be 5 years or older to visit and can only visit non-COVID-19 hospitalized patients. Children must follow masking guidelines and remain with an adult at all times while on Monument Health property. Hospital visiting hours are 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

New faces abound at Hell Canyon Ranger District

Jeff Tomac, Black Hills National Forest Supervisor, has announced Rob Hoelscher as the new District Ranger at Hell Canyon Ranger District in Custer.
Hoelscher comes to the Black Hills National Forest from Bridger-Teton National Forest. Rob is currently serving as the Pinedale District Ranger in Pinedale, Wyo.  

Students honor veterans

After last year’s experiment with an outdoor program at the Veterans Memorial because of COVID-19, the Custer School District Veterans Day program was moved back into the warmth and shelter of the Armory on a cold and windy Thursday. Several hundred veterans, other community members and students were in attendance for the 27th annual program presented by students of Custer schools.

School COVID plan made more ‘user friendly’

Debate over the Custer School District’s COVID-19 Operational Plan heated up again at the November meeting of the Board of Education last Monday and for a few minutes at least, the entire policy was in effect declared null and void.

Explore Custer’s future Nov. 23

The Custer Economic Development Corp., Custer Chamber of Commerce,  City of Custer and Custer County invite the area citizenry for the continuation of the “Exploring Custer’s Future” presentation from January 2019. Those who attend can learn what has been accomplished in Custer in the past two years and discuss what is possible moving forward.
The event will include a lunch and presentation at 11 a.m. Nov. 23 at the Custer County Courthouse Annex Pine Room.

Fire has parallels to 2017 blaze

Nearly four years after the Legion Lake wildfire driven by high winds roared through more than 54,000 acres of Custer State Park (CSP), a fire which started in the same general area and under similar conditions was stopped last week after burning just 58 acres.  

Hermosa wants help with water

The Town of Hermosa is planning for the future, and clean drinking water is a huge part of those plans. To achieve that goal, the town wants to install a system that will bring the radium and uranium in the waters down to acceptable levels and keep them there. To achieve that goal, the town needs money. The town would like Custer County to help with that cause.

Buffalo prices down again this year

Prices were down for the third straight year at the 56th annual Custer State Park Fall Classic Bison Auction, as the park brought in $384,625 from this year’s auction, which was down from $443,700 the previous year and just over $600,000 the year before that.

South Dakota joins vax suit

 South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg joined an eleven-state coalition in filing a lawsuit against Joe Biden and the Biden Administration to halt their vaccine mandate on private employers with more than 100 employees. This coalition of states is the first to file suit against the vaccine mandate on private employers. Five private employers joined the challenge as well. A Petition for Judicial Review was filed in the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Veterans Day events set

Veterans Day is approaching, and with it comes a variety of events around Custer County to honor those who served the United States through military service.
As always, the centerpiece of the day will be the annual Veterans Day program put on by Custer School District Thursday, at 2 p.m. at the Armory. This year marks the 27th annual ceremony.
