Couple to participate in Walk to End Alzheimer’s

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Black Hills residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Founders Park in Rapid City. Custer area residents Dave and Denise Swartz will also be participating in the walk. Dave Swartz was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in recent years, and is now the first in the state to undergo a new FSA-approved treatment for Alzheimer’s known as Leqembi.

Crash ends with upside down vehicle

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office assisted in responding to an accident within Pennington County near the Custer County line late last Thursday evening. The name of the 58-year old driver has not been released.
When deputies arrived, the Hermosa woman was still buckled into the driver’s seat, although her 2005 Subaru Legacy was flipped upside down.

Deadline missed for November fire district vote

There will be no November vote to enact the proposed Custer Fire Protection District after a deadline to get the issue onto the November general election ballot came and went without a required resolution to establish the district being approved by the city and county.

Leave it to beaver (dam analogs)

Beaver dam analogs (BDAs) seem to be the hottest technique in stream restoration across the country. What many consider to be destructive pests are proving to be instrumental in maintaining the health of watery ecosystems in South Dakota and beyond, but by using BDAs, the benefits of beavers can be replicated without the challenges of managing a beaver population.

Fire district talk resurfaces

About an hour or so after the Custer County Commission had discussed  a fire protection district resolution failing to make this  November’s ballot the issue came up again during the public comment portion of the Aug. 21 meeting of the Custer County Commission meeting.

City gives OK to sign regulations

The Custer City Council passed the second reading of its new sign regulations ordinance at its Aug. 19 meeting, an ordinance that, among other things, prohibits T-shirts as permanent signage outside of a downtown store.
That doesn’t mean the current T-shirts are going away anytime soon.

Ranchers facing federal charges

What began as a seemingly-routine investigation of approximately 25 acres of land and a 70-year-old fence line between deeded and federal ground has escalated to a criminal suit, with ranchers Charles and Heather Maude of Caputa charged federally with theft of government property, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

Triple T owner requests reduction

The Custer City Council heard a request from Darren Seidan, the owner of Triple T Trailer Park, at its Aug. 5 meeting.
When Seidan took over ownership of the “infamous” Triple T Trailer Park east of Custer, he had a lot of work to do to bring it up to snuff. He purchased it with a partner about three years ago.
“It wasn’t in the best shape when we bought it and its only gotten worse and worse and worse,” said Seidan. So, he took the partner to court and bought her out.

CTE addition construction to begin

The Custer School District is slated to break ground in coming weeks for the new CTE (Career and  Technical Education) addition to the Custer Jr./Sr. High School after some final estimates and documents were approved by the school board in its August meeting last week.
Construction Manager Steve Burgess gave an overview of the different bid options regarding temperature controls, dust collectors and a potential connecting corridor between the addition and the high school.
“Overall, we were pretty happy with how the numbers came in,” said Burgess.

Dates to remember this school year

Today is the first day of school in Custer School District, but that’s not the only important date to remember this academic year. Here’s the rundown on how the school year is set to go:
On Aug. 27,  early childhood screenings will be held in Custer, and again on Aug. 29 for families in Hermosa.
Homecoming week is set for Sept. 23-27, culminating in the homecoming football game versus Lead-Deadwood Friday night.
