Creating colorful collages in Keystone

Pop artist and author Michael Albert drew about two dozen people to the Keystone Community Center July 8.
Albert is on a 65-day tour that takes him primarily across Iowa and South Dakota giving a hands-on workshop about his unique art. All total he will visit 122 different places. Traveling by car, Albert can do a show virtually anywhere.
He’s presented his ideas at libraries, parks, makerspaces, festivals and museums. Along the way he leaves a bit of his art behind.

Lakota Lake isn’t as hidden, but still a gem

Tiny Lakota Lake can be found just outside of Keystone on Iron Mountain Road. And while it’s not quite so hidden it is quite a gem.
The lake features fishing, picnicking and even rock scrambling and climbing. Anglers often find rainbow trout in the cold waters.
Another great amenity is hiking. One can choose to hike around the lake or pick up the number No. 15 Iron Creek Trail right across the street.
The trail crosses the creek numerous times winding in and out of open spaces and woodsy shade. It is approximately six miles long out and back.

5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — Bob Stanfiel, with Alpine Inn, received the Grand Master’s Award of Merit at the Masonic Lodge in Hill City on June 28. This award was presented for his efforts bringing joy and tasty food to the people affected by the Cottonwood Fire. All told, $42,000 was raised for the Cottonwood Fire Fund through the event. Stanfiel was also given a Masonic jewel that is one-of-a-kind and only he can wear. He was truly humbled and honored to receive the award.

High diesel costs hurting farmers and ranchers

Record high prices for unleaded gasoline are getting much of the attention from the public and politicians across the country right now, but an even bigger financial impact is being felt by truckers and farmers in South Dakota who are paying far more at the pump than usual for diesel fuel.

Love INC resources available in Hill City and Keystone

Love In the Name of Christ is an organization that helps churches work together to help the surrounding community and create a culture of service. Their vision is “to see people thriving in healthy relationships where they know their value, purpose and place in Christ and our community.”
In February, a team including Dale Householder, Natalie Cutler, Mary Larson, Jeremy Duprey, Roxanne DuBois and Pam Kaubisch gathered to begin implementing Love INC in Hill City and Keystone.
Thus far, “It has been a gradual and promising start,” said Cutler.

Hidden Gems - Sunday Gulch in West Pennington County

If you drive Highway 16 at all, you've probably driven past a dam between the turn to Sylvan Lake and the turn to Mount Rushmore. Hidden in that corner beyond the roar of traffic is a peaceful little lake called Sunday Gulch.
When first arriving, there is a decorative bridge crossing a gentle stream. You can look over the edge, watch the water bubble over the rocks and even spot a dime in the water where someone made a wish. Meanwhile, just beyond the stream is a mass of reeds and cattails whistling in the wind and nodding in the breeze.
