Life doesn’t come with an eraser

Sometimes I wish life came with an eraser. 
In junior high I had an English teacher who forbid the class from writing with pencils. Instead, he wanted everyone to use a pen so they were more thoughtful and less haphazard in their writing. For those who dared use a pencil, he promised he would bite off the eraser if he saw it being used.

Am I the only one who wants to vote for Dennis? I know he’s not running but I sure wish he was.
As a constituent Dennis always got back to me. Yes, I know I’m a reporter, but when I reached out to him it was always as a constituent and he always replied. That’s what I want from my representative, somebody who takes the time to listen to my concerns.

Have you ever researched the pottery process? 
I’ve been fascinated with the creation of pottery ever since middle school. One year while at a living history fair, I stumbled across a potter’s tent. I remember being mesmerized as the potter worked with swift, sure motions to shape something out of nothing. He talked as he worked and explained the process to a group of kids. 

Too many puppies

I couldn’t imagine shooting a puppy. I read what the media reported about Noem and her puppy Cricket. It made me really sad. I’ve been mad at my dog before, both Zeus and Sadie. I’ve maybe had moments where I hated them. And the idea of shooting either one of them never entered my head.
I couldn’t even fathom this.

I almost forgot how much I love bookstores. 
Recently, I went book shopping in Rapid City with my brother and some friends. While living in Minnesota, I went to the used bookstore at least once a month. However, my favorite store chain didn’t cross into South Dakota, and after moving I didn’t know where to go. 
As a result, I hadn’t been in a bookstore since December 2022. Of course, there were several library book sales, and I ordered numerous books from author websites, Amazon and ThriftBooks. I also use the library and the Libby app frequently.

Before the most recent Keystone election occurred  I wondered to myself, “why does Keystone hold its election in April, versus having it in June coupled with the county/state?”

Run your race

Whose race are you running? At first glance, you might say my own. It seems like the obvious answer. I mean, you can’t run someone else’s race, can you?
Turns out you can. In the movie “The Perfect Race,” the track coach challenges a runner to always run her own race rather than worrying about the other runners. When we worry about the other runners, we tend to stumble more. We try to run the way they do and align ourselves to their image. In the process, we stop running our own race and start copying theirs. 

Of Mice and Men

Yesterday was a proud mama moment for me. Zeus and I went to do our weekly/monthly hike up to our favorite South Dakota high point, but a crazy snow storm and a car in a ditch on the switchbacks cost us some time. We ventured down the No. 9 trail with no particular goal in mind. One of us was wishing we had brought our gaiters and couldn’t fathom how intense the conditions were considering it was almost sunny in Keystone. 
The other of us was chasing deer trails in the snow.

Importance of community

Our society has a very independent mindset. We are told to pull ourselves up, figure out the solution and fix whatever problem is at hand. Dependency is seen as a weakness, and independence is seen as a strength. This ideology is especially prevalent in big cities. 
And yet we are not meant to be alone either. Statistics show that three in five people feel lonely every day. Loneliness can leave people feeling isolated and disconnected. It can increase the risk of physical conditions like heart disease and strokes, and it amplifies depression and anxiety.

Property tax to be studied this summer

So, we put the finishing touches on the 99th Legislative Session on Monday, March 25, which was scheduled as veto day, the day when legislators come back together to deal with the bills that the legislature passed through both chambers and sent to the governor for her signature in order to become law but she declined to sign.
