Mikennah Oleson is Rising Star finalist

The final round of the 16th annual Rising Star of the West Scholarship Contest began Monday April 25 on The SIX and on Black Hills FOX News at Nine. This year’s contest, sponsored by KEVN Black Hills FOX and Monument Health, offers a total of $7,500 in scholarship money.

All School Science Fair draws 72 entries

Have you ever wondered what the germiest place in the school is? Or what solution will remove a stain from a five by five piece of fabric the best? 
Perhaps you thought about how music affects a dog’s behavior? Or if the five second rule is true? These are just some of the questions that students in the Hill City School District aimed to answer by scientific investigation at the annual All School Science Fair.

Fun there was at Dr. Seuss Carnival

The annual Dr. Seuss Carnival and Literacy Night returned to Hill City Elementary School on Friday, March 4. Elementary families were invited to come to the school and go room to room playing carnival games with their kids for fun prizes. Many kids and adults dressed up as their favorite book or movie characters, and the Cat in the Hat paid a visit as well. 

Oleson featured on Rising Star of the West

Hill City High School senior Mikennah Oleson will be featured as part of KEVN Black Hills FOX’s Rising Star of the West scholarship contest Friday, Feb. 18, on The SIX and on Black Hills FOX News at 9 p.m. Oleson qualified for the contest by submitting a short video of herself to KEVN Black Hills FOX.

One-act play receives superior rating

Hill City thespians had an opportunity to shine at the state one-act competition last Friday at Central High School in Rapid City, and shine they did. All the hard work, memorizing lines and practicing their performance again and again, paid off with a superior rating from the three-judge panel.
“The critique from the judges was the best I have ever had in my years of directing plays,” said Bryon Christian, director of “Mmmbeth,” a comedic rendition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the play the high school students performed last Friday.

Student council serves a good cause

Every year student councils from across South Dakota meet for a state convention. There they have an opportunity to work together on a service project to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). This cause was chosen to be the focus of energies statewide specifically because all of the money raised remains local and benefits the pediatric/infant unit.
On Jan. 28 the Hill City High School student council held its fifth annual silent dessert auction to support CMN and the work they do. The goal was to raise $1,000.

Rangers' one act play is state bound

On Jan. 26 the Hill City High School Drama Department participated in the regional one-act play contest with a hilarious rendition of Macbeth called "Mmmbeth" by Allison Williams set in Shakespeare’s Scotland. Hill City was one of two schools chosen to go on to the state festival on Feb. 4 at Rapid City Central High School. Four students received additional acting awards including Mikennah Oleson, Alex Bobbe, Natasha Winter and Emma Euneau.

Reed paints mural in high school

Hill City High School senior and young artist Catera Reed was recently asked to share her skills with Hill City High School by painting a mural of a graduating class in front of Mount Rushmore. Going to Mount Rushmore is an annual tradition for Hill City High School’s graduates, and according to Reed, “A lot of students look forward to it just because it is a cool experience.” Now thanks to Reed’s talent with a paintbrush, a mural of the tradition graces the school’s commons. 

Children’s theater comes to Hill City

The Missoula Children’s Theater (MCT) made its way to Hill City, giving the opportunity for many local children to perform in a live production of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”
