Run Crazy Horse runners set the pace

The Run Crazy Horse Marathon and Half- Marathon was held Sunday.

The race started at Crazy Horse Memorial. Participants wound their way through the Black Hills before finishing on Main Street in Hill City. It was a beautiful, sun-shiny day with perfect temperatures for running.

Over 1,000 people from 45 states, Canada and the United Kingdom registered for the race, said Emily Wheeler, race organizer.

Cross county girls take their revenge on Stevens

It didn’t take the Custer High School varsity girls cross country team long to get their revenge on Class AA school Rapid City Stevens for beating them in the Rapid City Invitational meet a couple weeks ago. In their very next meeting at the Sturgis Invite last Thursday, the Wildcats took first place, pushing Stevens back to third.

For the past seven or so quarters of football, the Custer High School Wildcat defense has been nearly perfect.
It has now been two games and counting since the first-team defense of the Wildcats has given up a score, as the ’Cats added to their first-team shutout of Todd County two weeks ago with a 41-0 blanking of Bennett County during last Friday night’s homecoming game at Wildcat Field.

Despite losses Wildcats make gains

Coming off a week in which they beat Spearfish and took second place in the Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI), the Lady Wildcats volleyball team dropped two games during homecoming week but continue to play stronger and stronger going into the final weeks of the season. 
On Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Custer team traveled to Box Elder to take on Douglas, hoping to avenge a five set loss to the Patriots at home on Sept. 2. 

Rangers tournament win caps winning week

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team capped of a week where it went 8-0 — including six wins on Saturday — with a win at the Belle Fourche Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

To start off the day, the team beat Douglas, Lyman and Hot Springs. It played Belle Fourche to make into the semifinals, where it was matched up against St. Thomas More.

’Cats repeat as region champs

For the second consecutive year, the Custer High School boys golf team is the best golf team in Region 4A.
The Wildcats blew away the field at the tournament, held Monday at Hart Ranch, as they finished with a team score of 373, well ahead of second place-finishing St. Thomas More, which finished with a score of 428.
The Wildcats were led by Austin Eggers, who after finishing as region runner-up a year ago added region champion to his resume, as he finished with an 80 to win the meet.

Wildcats mercy rule Falcons

The Custer High School football team got back in the win column in a big way last Friday evening at Wildcat Field, scoring the first 32 points of the game on the way to a 62-12 game that was ended via the mercy rule early in the third quarter.
Custer head coach Dave Williams called the victory a big one after the team dropped two straight games, including a heart-breaker to Belle Fourche two weeks ago.

Cross country girls take second at Hart Ranch

The Custer varsity girls cross country team placed second at the Rapid City Invitational meet at Hart Ranch on Friday and in the process got a great education about what it takes to win races. 
“Our girls were second behind [AA school Rapid City] Stevens who we beat last week,” said coach Karen Karim, “but it was awfully close. Five points in cross country, in a big meet like that is...there are lots of places you can make those points up. So it was a good learning experience for our girls.”

Volleyball team off to strong start in season’s second half

The Custer High School girls volleyball team showed its muscle last week in a win over Class AA Spearfish and then went on to take second place in the Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI) in Rapid City. 
On Thursday night the Lady Wildcats beat the Spartans on the road in four sets, (25-22), (25-21), (20-25) and (25-11).

Cheer works back from crash

Still recovering from injuries sustained in a collision between two teammates at the Custer Invitational Cheer and Dance Meet last week, the Custer competitive cheer team finished fourth out of four teams at the Sturgis Scooper Spirit Invite on Monday. 
Working with a replacement for Jade Carder who was kicked in the head in the competition last week and was still on the injured list Monday night, the team performed its regular routine at Sturgis but managed to score only a 92.5 compared with 116.5 for tourney-winning Hot Springs.
