Are COVID-19 deaths down?

You wouldn’t know it by all the scary headlines last week, but it appears COVID-19 deaths are actually going down in this country. It seems the various media outlets  seek to keep the virus in the news forever. Here are some of the headlines.
“Biden urges Americans to “stay vigilant” for COVID threat amid push for federal workers to get vaccinated.”
“Teachers’ union president suggests schools may not reopen after new CDC guidelines.”
“Pelosi backpedals as Capitol Police respond to order that staff and visitors without masks be apprehended.”
“Biden Administration calls for $100 Coronavirus vaccine payments.”
“DC mayor reinstates indoor mask mandates.”
“U.S. Surgeon General suggests vaccinated people wear masks outdoors as an “extra step” to protect unvaccinated.”
“Military mulls mandatory injections.”
By reading any of the above headlines and subsequent stories you would think the sky is falling and that we are all back to square one in the battle against this virus.
A recent article by Kipp Jones, a political writer for The Western Journal, points out that COVID deaths in this country have been dropping substantially since a high of 104,904 were recorded in January this year, according to the CDC. The following month of February the agency attributed 47,313 deaths to the virus. That is a substantial drop and the number of monthly deaths continued to fall each month, including last month.
Jones gets his information from a graph shared on Twitter by Harvard Medical School professor Martin Kulldorff, which cited the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Research Center as its source. Significant is the fact that the CDC’s information on cases and deaths show the same trend shared by Johns Hopkins University and Kulldorff.
You wouldn’t know this if all you heard in the major media was that the so-called Delta variant is leading to more talk of lockdowns and a return of masks “as the federal government is essentially undercutting its own messaging on vaccine efficacy,” Jones wrote. Interesting enough is the fact that about half the new virus cases have been fully vaccinated and half are unvaccinated.
Through last Friday, 4,054 deaths were attributed to COVID in July, which is a significant drop from 7,493 reported in June. And June numbers were the lowest since 7,159 deaths were reported in March 2020, the month the disease really took off in this country and around the world.
So, Jones logically concludes that the pandemic is now less deadly than it has been at any point “since this nightmare began, and that statement isn’t speculative. It’s based on science and analytics.”
He also says, “People who mask-shame, watch left-wing CNN and virtue signal about their vaccine status often shout down their opposition, declaring those with whom they disagree to not be ‘scientists.’ One doesn’t need to be a scientist to read a graph.”
He rightly points out that the same people “pushing fear about new disease variants are the same people who are the gatekeepers of information.” This is why stories like this will never see the light of day in mainstream media.
The true numbers don’t tell us we are in dire straits. In fact it is just the opposite. The numbers are going down.
