Freshman Shauna Zacher continues to lead the Custer girls golf team heading into post season play. Zacher led the team in three tournaments over the past week, culminating in a tie for ninth place at the Black Hills Conference Tourney held in Custer on Monday morning.
Zacher’s score of 104 tied her with Amity Strand of St. Thomas More (STM) and helped the Wildcat golfers to a forth place finish as a team.
Spearfish won the tourney, played on a wet course with cold and blustery winds blowing out of the northwest with a combined score of 360, followed by STM in second (412) and Sturgis in third with 427 strokes. Custer’s team score was 451.
Lauryn Robb also made it into the top 15, finishing in 11th place with a score of 110. Custer’s next best score was achieved by Maddie Meyer, who shot a 117. She was followed by Quinn Lewison (120) and Jordyn Uphoff with 122.
Makenna Allen tied for first in the JV round, shooting 54 in nine holes.
A week earlier on their home course at the pre-conference Custer Invitational, the Wildcats placed third behind Spearfish and Hot Springs with a score of 440.
Zacher led the Wildcats, shooting a 104 and Lewison was two strokes back at 106. Meyer and Allen tied at 115 but Uphoff did not complete the first nine and skipped the back nine.
On Thursday the Custer golfers traveled to Hot Springs for its invitational and finished second in a field of five teams with a total of 455 to 428 strokes for the host team.
There Zacher tied for third place with a score of 98, shared with Olivia Torgerson of Spearfish. Lewison was again second for the Custer team, tying for ninth place with golfers from Hot Springs and STM with 115.
Uphoff, with 119 strokes, tied for 10th with Chloe Schmoker of Belle Fourche and Meyer tied for 12th place with Alex Burgiss of Hot Springs with a score of 123. Robb was in 18th place, shooting 136.
On Tuesday the team travels back to Belle Fourche for a second time this season to compete in the Region 8A Tournament for a berth at the state tournament, which is set for Tea beginning June 6. The Wildcats have set a goal of qualifying for state for the second year in a row and appear to be on track toward meeting that goal.
