CHS cabins up for auction

With the high demand for all kinds of lodging in the Custer area, two cabins offered for sale this week by Custer School District should be hot items.
The cabins were constructed over the past two years by the residential construction class at Custer High School. They will be offered for sale in an online auction by Bradeen Auctions beginning Thursday at noon. Bidding will close Tuesday at noon.
The 14x20-foot cabins feature wood frame construction, steel roofing, a bathroom, kitchen cabinets and laminate flooring.
The early end of the school year in the spring of 2020 due to COVID-19 left the cabins unfinished, so students spent the most recent school year putting the finishing touches on the interior of the structures.
Welding and industrial tech teacher Jared Webster, who supervised the construction along with industrial tech teacher Slade Swedlund, said having the extra year to work on the cabins allowed the students to gain experience in areas like plumbing, cabinetry, flooring, trim and other finish work. Some of the interior and exterior finishing touches were not completed, however.
Some have suggested the class always have two cabins under construction, one in the framing stage and the other at the finish level, so students can gain experience at both ends of the construction process.
“We’d love to do that,” said Webster, “and hopefully we can get to that point.”
Webster said the class has averaged about 16 students over the past couple of years and those students are often sought after by local contractors when they graduate because of the hands-on experience they have gained.
