Custer boys take first at Bill Young Invitational

Striking hard in the first tournament of the season, the Custer High School wrestling team dominated the mat Dec. 5 at the Bill Young Invitational Tournament at the Custer Armory, walking away with a first place finish.
The evening before, the Wildcats competed in the Custer Duals at the Armory.  
Overall, head coach Jared Webster said, “It went good. We’re young. Thank goodness we had a full roster with some other teams, but the other teams are looking good. So we have some competition this year.”
Webster said it was nice to see Riley Scott get back on the mat as well. 
“He’s very technical and good, but it was just nice seeing everybody just get back out on the mat,” said Webster. 
Custer won the dual against Hot Springs 40-37.
In the 106 weight class, Easton Dooley won by forfiet. In the 113 weight class,  Hazen Rutz won over Wildcat Cole Scott by fall at 2:50. In the 120 weight class, Wildcat Myles Woodward won over Layton Ringstmeyer by fall at 0:46. In the 126 weight class, John Ryder Weiss won by fall over Wildcat Jackson Trant at 1:24. In the 132 weight class, Jhett Nordick won over Wildcat Riley Trout by fall at 2:54. In the 138 weight class, Wildcat Ayden Dooley won by forfeit. In the 144 weight class, Wildcat Bodie Vanderboom won over Seth Booth by major decision (MD 11-2). 
In the 150 weight class, Wildcat R. Scott won over Dain Alldredge by fall at 1:28. In the 157 weight class, Holden Luper won over Wildcat David Lewis by major decision, 10-2. In the 165 weight class, Thor Fish won over Wildcat Blaise Arp in sudden victory 7-4. In the 175 weight class, Wildcat Carter Kern won over Blazen Stiefvater by fall at 0:54. In the 190 weight class, Dean Nathan won over Wildcat Caleb Fisher by fall at 1:36.
In the 215 weight class, Hunter Kunz won by forfeit. In the 285 weight class, Wildcat Zayden LaPlaca won over Von Mogen-Frankfort by fall at 34 seconds.
Webster said the team won that dual by bringing up seventh grader Easton Dooley, who helped the Wildcats get a forfeit, “so thanks to him for stepping up and helping the team out.” 
After that, Custer defeated Harding County 48-39.
In the 106 weight class, C. Scott won by forfeit. In the 113 weight class, Woodward won by forfeit. In the 120 weight class, Wildcat Relic Bailey won over Daeson Moncur by major decision, 17-4. In the 126 weight class,  Trant won by forfeit. In the 132 weight class, Jaxson Turbiville won over Trout by fall at 2:01. In the 138 weight class, Revyn Floyd won over A. Dooley by fall at 1:58. In the 144 weight class, Jace Vroman won over Vanderboom by fall at 27 seconds.
In the 150 weight class, Jace Vroman won over Wildcat Carson Hanis by fall at 32 seconds and Cash Hanson won over Wildcat Henry Bell by fall at 3:06. In the 157 weight class, R. Scott won over Kordell Bruha by fall at three seconds, and Carter won over Brylen Padden by technical fall, 15-0. In the 165 weight class, Shay Smith won over Lewis in sudden victory, 7-5. In the 175 weight class, Arp won over Brayden Secrest by decision. In the 190 weight class, Kern won by forfeit. 
In the 215 weight class,  Deon Tenold won over Fisher by fall at 48 seconds In the 285 weight class, LaPlaca won over Will Erk by fall at 1:23.
Finally, Custer faced Burk-Gregory, winning 53-35. 
In the 106 weight class,  C. Scott won over Otto Reber by fall at 1:30. In the 113 weight class, Dane Johnson won over Woodward by fall at 5:18. In the 120 weight class, Bailey won over Gabriel Ekroth by fall at 3:10. In the 126 weight class, Trant won over Boone Beck by fall at 1:52. In the 132 weight class, Trout won over Reed Sedlacek by fall at 2:36. In the 138 weight class, A. Dooley won by forfeit. In the 144 weight class, Bell won by forfeit. 
In the 150 weight class, Eli Ekroth won over Wildcat Archer Vershure by fall at 1:05. In the 157 weight class, Logan Hanson won over Wildcat Robert Carter by fall at 1:35, and R. Scott won by forfeit. In the 165 weight class, Wyatt Beck won over Lewis by fall at 1:41. In the 175 weight class, Arp won over Avery Sengelmann by technical fall, 19-2. In the 190 weight class, Mason Janek won over Kern by technical fal, 15-0.
In the 215 weight class, Rosin Brozik won over Fisher by fall at 17 seconds. In the 285 weight class, LaPlaca won over Dale Smikle by fall at 3:12.
As for the victory at the Bill Young Invitational Tournament, Webster said, “It went well. I didn’t think we’d be as high as we were, to tell you the truth, with having a lot of open weight classes that day…ending up getting all those points was pretty nice, and there were a lot of young kids stepping up. Cole Scott stepped up, Ayden Dooley looked good and a lot of kids started to show themselves.”
Competing in the 106 weight class, C. Scott (3-0) placed first and scored 26 team points. 
C. Scott received a bye in the championship round one. In the quarterfinal, he won by fall over Reber of Burke-Gregory at 1:25. For the semifinal, he won by decision over Caden Swaney of Belle Fourche. Then, in the first place match, he won by fall over Ryan Ragsdale of Hemingford at 3:02.
Woodward (2-2) competed in the 113 weight class, placed fourth and scored 16 team points. 
Woodward received a bye in the championship round one. In the quarterfinal, Woodward won by fall over Nixin Carter of Douglas-Rapid City Christian at 31 seconds. For the semifinal, Tommy Studt of New Underwood won by fall over Woodward at 1:45. In the consolation semi,  Woodward won by fall over Austin Lange of Custer at 3:25. Then in the third place match, Hazen Rutz of Hot Springs won in sudden victory (9-6) over Woodward.
Austin Lange (1-3) placed sixth in the 113 weight class. 
Lange received a bye in the championship round one. In the quarterfinal, Dane Johnson of Burke-Gregory won by fall over Lange at 20 seconds. For the consolation round two, Lange received a bye. In the consolation round three, Lange won by fall over Wace Kammerer of Lead-Deadwood at 2:41. For the consolation semi, Woodward won by fall over Lange at 3:25. Then in the fifth place match, Carter of Douglas/Rapid City Christian won by fall over Lange at 1:56.
Trant (2-2) placed fourth in the 120 weight class. 
Trant received a bye in the championship round one. In the quarterfinal, Trant won by decision over Layton Ringstmeyer of Hot Springs. For the semifinal, Tel Elshere of New Underwood won by fall over Trant at 1:51. In the consolation semi, Trant won by fall over Ekroth of Burke-Gregory at 1:32. Then, in the third place match, Bailey of Custer won by decision over Trant. 
Baliey (4-1) also competed in the 120 weight class, placing third and scoring 18 team points. 
In the championship round one, Bailey won by fall over Dom Warrior of Pine Ridge at 3:46. For the quarterfinal, Bailey won by fall over Teedin Humble of Belle Fourche at 3:36. In the semifinal, Quintin Kelly of Sturgis Brown won by tech fall, 16-0, over Bailey. For the consolation semi, Bailey won by decision over Layton Ringstmeyer of Hot Springs. Then in the third place match, Bailey won by decision over Trant.
Riley Martinez (0-2) competed in the 126 weight class.
In the championship round one, Jonah McCormick of Rapid City Stevens won by major decision, 17-6, over Martinez. Martinez received a bye for the consolation round one. In the consolation round two, Emmet Ohrtman of Rapid City Stevens won by tech fall, 17-2, over Martinez. 
Also competing in the 126 weight class, Trout (4-1) placed third and scored 18 team points.
In the championship round one Ohrtman won by major decision, 19-7, over Trout. Trout received a bye in the consolation round one. For the consolation round two, Trout won by fall over McCormick at one minute. In the consolation round three, Trout won by fall over Dayton Dreamer of Lakota Tech at 1:36. For the consolation semi, Trout won by fall over Elshere at 1:55. Then in the third place match, Trout won by decision over  Ohrtman. 
Easton Gramkow (2-0) placed first in the 126-B weight class.
In round one, Gramkow won by fall over Peyton Kallstrom of Douglas-Rapid City Christian at 2:59. In round two, Gramkow won by fall over Peyton Kallstrom of Douglas-Rapid City Christian at 33 seconds.
Competing in the 132 weight class, A. Dooley (3-1) placed second and scored 22 team points.
In the championship round one, A. Dooley won by fall over Brysan Phelps of Rapid City Stevens at 2:53. For the quarterfinal, A. Dooley won by major decision, 13-4, over Dylan Park of Belle Fourche. In the semifinal, Dooley won by major decision, 13-3, over Sedlacek of Burke-Gregory. Then in the first place match Turbiville won by fall over Dooley at 5:06
Vanderboom (2-2) placed fourth and scored 13 team points in the 138 weight class.
Vanderboom received a bye in the championship round one. In the quarterfinal, Braydon Munier of Sturgis Brown won by fall over Vanderboom at 1:43. Vanderboom received a bye for the consolation round two. In the consolation round three, Vanderboom won by fall over Joseph Hauckhausen of Rapid City Stevens at 45 seconds. For the consolation semi, Vanderboom won by fall over Tanner Wempen of Rapid City Stevens by fall at 1:49. Then in the third -place match, Garet Huston of Belle Fourche won by fall over Vanderboom by fall at 2:23.
Vershure (0-2) competed in the 144 weight class. In the championship round one, Seth Booth of Hot Springs won by fall over Vershure at 3:17. For the consolation round one, Alejandro Martinez of Douglas-Rapid City Christian won by fall over Vershure at 2:41.
Also in the 144 weight class was Bell (0-2).
In the championship round one, Jake Peters of Sturgis Brown won by fall over Bell at 3:18. For the consolation round one, Parker Millard of Lead-Deadwood won by fall over Bell at 40 seconds.
R. Scott (4-0) took first in the 150 weight class and earned the team 30 points, which was more than any other Wildcat. 
In the championship round one, Scott won by fall over Kolby Tibbs of Belle Fourche. For the quarterfinal, Scott won by fall over Jericho Morgan of Douglas-Rapid City Christian at  58 seconds In the semifinal, won by fall over Cash Hanson of Harding County at 2:22. Then in the first place match, Scott won by fall over Eli Ekroth of Burke-Gregory at 1:01.
“Riley’s just a tough kid, and he’s going to be fun to watch this year,” said Webster.
Hanis (0-2) competed in the 150 weight class. 
In the championship round one, Jack McManigal of Rapid City Stevens won by tech fall, 21-5, over Hanis. For consolation round one, Dain Alldredge of Hot Springs won by fall over Hanis at 36 seconds.
Carter (0-2) competed in the 157 weight class.
In the championship round one, William Thompson of Douglas-Rapid City Christian won by fall over  Carter at 13 seconds. For the consolation round one, Weston Perschbacher of Sturgis Brown won by fall over Carter at 2:07.
Also competing in the 157 weight class, Lewis (3-2) placed fifth and scored 14 team points.
In the championship round one, Lewis won by fall over Kaleb Arellano of Rapid City Stevens at 1:08. For the quarterfinal, Lewis won by major decision over Parker Anderson of Sturgis Brown. In the semifinal, Lincoln Wickstrom of Harding County won by fall over Lewis at 1:03. For the consolation semi, William Thompson of Douglas-Rapid City Christian won by fall over Lewis at 2:53. Then in the fifth place match, Lewis won by injury default over Wyatt Beck of Burke-Gregory. 
Colton Dorrance (0-2) competed in the 157 weight class as well. 
In the championship round one, Bruha won by fall over Dorrance at 1:06. For the consolation round one, Luper won by tech fall  17-0, over Dorrance. 
Arp (2-2) placed fifth in the 165 weight class and scored 13 team points.
Arp received a bye in the championship round one. In the quarterfinal, Arp won by fall over Smith of Harding County at 5:26. For the semifinal, Fish of Hot Springs won by decision over Arp. In the consolation semi, Landyn Mahaffy of Sturgis Brown won by decision over Arp. Then in the fifth place match, Arp won by fall over Koby Bowden of Belle Fourche at 4:31.
LaPlaca (3-0) was another Wildcat to place first in the 285 weight class. He scored 28 team points.
LaPlaca received a bye in the championship round one. In the quarterfinal, LaPlaca won by fall over Traydon Coghlan of Rapid City Stevens at 1:11. For the semifinal, LaPlaca won by fall over Marty Reeve of St. Thomas More at 2:17. Then in the first place match, LaPlaca won by fall over Owen Plog of Hemingford, Neb., at 3:11.
“It’s nice seeing Zayden in his senior year just having fun and wanting to wrestle every second,” said Webster.
Also competing in the 285 weight class, Logan Olson (2-3) placed sixth. In the championship round one, Olson won by fall over Anpo One Feather of Pine Ridge at 3:44. For the quarterfinal, Olson won by fall over Spencer Ladd of Rapid City Stevens at 2:58. In the semifinal, Owen Plog of Hemingford won by fall over Olson 36 seconds. For the consolation semi, Traydon Coghlan of Rapid City Stevens won by fall over Olson at 1:29. Then in the fifth place match, Carlito Rouland of Lakota Tech won by disqualification over Olson.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do. There are some situations that we missed during practice that we struggled with that we’ve got to get fixed this week. We can only go up, hopefully,” Webster said.
The Wildcats will be dividing up this week. The varsity boys will be competing at the Rapid City Invitational Dec. 12-13 at The Monument Summit Arena, and the junior varsity boys will be competing at the Burke-Gregory Tournament Dec. 13 and the Lakota Nation Invitational Tuesday, Dec. 13. 
“We’re looking for individual results for a while before we put the team back together,” said Webster. 
Webster added that if an athlete places at the Rapid City Invitational, they will likely place at state as well.
Through the tournaments, Webster wants to see the athletes get better every week, get matches in and get a good feel for the sport.
