Ernest Hezlitt, Jr.
Ernest Montgomery Hezlitt, Jr., age 81, of Custer, S.D., passed away peacefully July 29, 2024, at Fountain Springs Nursing Home in Rapid City, S.D.
Ernest had been a cherished member of the Custer community for 18 years before his recent move to the nursing home in April.
Born Oct. 2, 1942, in Denville, N.J., Ernest was the son of Ernest Montgomery Hezlitt Sr. and Flora Bell “Louise” French Hezlitt. He grew up in Morrisville, N.J., and graduated from Boonton High School.
Ernest’s passion for electronics began early; at just 13, he earned an electrical service license. His technical expertise continued to flourish as he served in the United States Navy, where he traveled the world on aircraft carriers. His time stationed in the Bahamas was particularly cherished as one of his favorite experiences.
Following his military service, Ernest enjoyed a successful 20-year career with Motorola before founding his own business specializing in satellite and electronics repair. He took great pride in his work and was known for his commitment and expertise.
Outside of his professional life, Ernest embraced a variety of interests. He was an avid motorcyclist, golfer, scuba diving instructor, bowler, woodworker, leatherworker and had a passion for reading science fiction novels. He impressively wrote three non published science fiction novels. Earnest’s enthusiasm for astronomy was matched only by his love for spending time with family and friends.
Ernest was known for his loving, honest and caring nature. He was a steadfast friend and generous soul, always ready to lend a helping hand. His tall, slim stature and signature handlebar mustache were well-recognized, as was his joyful spirit. One cherished memory includes taking his daughter, Marlena, on her first Gold Wing motorcycle ride at the age of 5.
Ernest’s legacy lives on through his daughter, Marlena Lerch-Gaspard of Custer; and his beloved grandchildren, Alyssa Engeron and Icent Crame’.
He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, including Sherri Eaker and Donna Stamm, who will miss him dearly. Ernest’s deep love for his parents and admiration for his father, along with his close bond with his sister, Barbara Lindner, are fondly remembered by all who knew him.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered their support and condolences during this time.
