Minutes may mean the difference between life and death for someone suffering a medical emergency. With that in mind, a Custer High School senior is organizing a first aid, CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) course for the public this weekend.
Czech Republic foreign exchange student Adela Marakova is offering the course this Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Custer Ambulance headquarters at 1105 Montgomery Street. It will instruct participants in basic first aid, how to correctly administer CPR and how to use an AED. The cost to each participant is $25.
“I invited the professionals who can teach and give the audience some good examples from their own experience,” said Marakova. “Since I’m having the actual professionals coming, everybody will receive the official certificate which could be useful for work or so many other things.”
Marakova said when she was deciding what to do for her senior project she wanted to do something that would be useful to the community and that she would enjoy as well.
“In the Czech Republic, I’m a part of the water rescue team and first aid is my big hobby,” said the senior, noting she understands how important it is for people to know basic first aid.
She said part of the inspiration for the project came from her mentor who told her a story about a teacher who saved a student’s life because she had been trained in first aid and from that had the courage to do what needed to be done.
Those who want to take the one-day training can email Marakova at am6070@k12.sd.us. Spaces are limited and the deadline for preregistration is Friday.
