Hill City’s quilt show this weekend

Fall isn’t the only one with dibs on color.

More than 300 quilts will rival Mother Nature Sept. 10-11 at the Hill City Quilt Show & Sale, now in its 23rd year.

The two-day indoor-outdoor event in the Hill City School Gym and on Main Street Hill City showcases a colorful array of unique quilts and fiber arts from around the region.

The show is a collaboration between the Hill City Arts Council and the Heart of the Hills Quilters Guild.

It also features one of the most unique activities treasured by attendees:  A “bed turning” where quilts are piled on a bed and when each one is turned, the quilt maker shares the story of the quilt.

2022’s Featured Quilt Artist is Pennee Clanton, founder and owner of Quilt Connection Two, a quilt shop located in Buffalo, S.D., where she enjoys quilting as her passion and teaching others to quilt.

“Our quilt show is about the artistry of quilts and fiber arts,” said Sherry Liddell, president of Hill City Arts Council.

“We are blessed with so many talented, creative quilters and passionate artists in our area.  Our show is a great way to bring artists and those who love their work together for this special weekend,” she added.

In addition to the Saturday night bed-turning, the show includes a dinner and quilt trunk show, prizes, demonstrations, vendor mall and youth arts activity.

“There’s even something for the guys,” said Liddell.

On Saturday, a special “Husband Drop-off” Show-and-Shine Car & Vintage Tractor Show is being sponsored by the South Dakota State Railroad Museum.

Classic and vintage vehicles will be on display across from the 1880 Train. The Railroad Museum will also exhibit quilts, too.

Show hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sept. 10 - 11.

Admission is $5 at the door for adults.

Kids ages 18 and under are admitted free.
