Illa Cannon

Illa Mae (Sutherland) Cannon was born Sept. 11, 1929 in Custer County, S.D. to Edgar A. Sutherland and Mattie M. (Barnes) Sutherland.
She graduated from Custer High School in 1947 and married Irvin Cannon in 1948 in Long Beach, Calif.
During her husband’s Air Force career, Illa moved around the country as her husband was stationed at various Air Force bases, primarily in California. Illa and Irv returned to the Black Hills  of South Dakota when Irv was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City.
They lived in Custer from 1965-69, where Illa began her career with the Custer County Civil Defense. They then moved to Rapid City and lived there from 1969-2007 where Illa pursued her career with the Pennington County Civil Defense.
In 2007, they moved to Colorado to be near family. Illa was a 60-year resident of South Dakota.
Illa died Aug. 1, 2024 in Castle Rock, Colo. She was 94.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin W. Cannon; parents; and brothers, Ray and Dean Sutherland.
Illa is survived by her four children and their families, Judy Cannon (Vince Griesemer) and their daughter Deborah Holloway and her daughters Lily, Cailyn and Evelyn; Cheri [Cannon] (Paul) Schuelke and their sons Brett Schuelke, married to Rachel, their children Brielle, Alyse, Nathaniel, Claire;  Peter Schuelke, married to Karina, their daughters Eden, Miranda, Vivien; Andrew Schuelke, married to Chelsea, their daughter Lowen; Mark Cannon married to Linda (Doehr), their sons Ryan and Tommy; and Gloria Cannon and her daughter Mia.
Services were Aug. 11 at Olingers Andrews Caldwell Gibson Chapel in Castle Rock.
