JoAnn Evans

JoAnn Jeanette Evans was born June 29, 1936, in Roundup Mont., to Edwin and Easter Lacey. They moved to Sheridan, Wyo., and then to Custer, S.D., JoAnn’s junior year of high school.
She married Bobby Evans April 18, 1958. They had two children, Greg and Terri.
JoAnn was a long-time resident of Custer, and she loved the Custer community and was very proud to be from Custer. JoAnn had many great friends in the Custer community. She was an active member of Custer Lutheran Fellowship. Her Church family provided her the spiritual support she needed and have been very helpful.
JoAnn worked at Kelly Drug for many years and Greg and Terri have many fond memories of going to the drug store after school for a treat from the soda fountain. JoAnn and Bobby were also the owners of Custer Gas Service with JoAnn’s brother, Ronnie, and his wife, Judy, for serval years before becoming the sole owners when Ronnie and Judy moved to Washington. JoAnn finished her working career at the Continental Phone Company, now Verizon.
JoAnn and Bobby enjoyed many hours on the golf course, where they made many memories. After retirement they were able to enjoy many winters in Arizona with many of their friends from Custer. JoAnn even scored an ace at Rocky Knolls Golf Course in Custer.
JoAnn was a very proud grandma. She was dedicated to her grandchildren and spent many hours and miles traveling to support them and foster a loving bond.
JoAnn passed away peacefully at the Custer Care and Rehab Center May 18, 2024. She was 88.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Esther Lacy; husband, Bobby Evans; and granddaughter, Casey Crane.
JoAnn is survived by her brother, Ron (Judy) Lacey of Custer; her children, Greg (Carol) Evans of Pierre S.D., and Terri (Ed) Meierkort of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Reid and Chayse; great-grandchildren, Jace, Zaden and Avery; and nephew, Ryan Lacey.
The family would like to thank the Custer Care and Rehab Center for the wonderful care and compassion she received in her final moments there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Custer Lutheran Fellowship or Custer Care and Rehab Center.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 23, at Custer Lutheran Fellowship Church with a lunch to follow.
Committal services will follow at 3 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.
