Linda Jackson

Linda Mae (Hattervig) Jackson was born Aug. 24, 1948, at Sioux Valley Hospital (now Sanford Hospital) in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Erma Mae and Thomas Ray Hattervig.
Linda spent her early years on a farm just east of Viborg, S.D. At the age of 5, her family moved into the town of Viborg, where she attended first and second grade. In 1956, they moved to Hill City, S.D., where Linda attended third grade. The following year, her family relocated to Custer, S.D., where Linda continued her education from fourth through 11th grade.
In 1965 the family moved to Pierre, S.D., where Linda completed her senior year at Riggs High School, graduating in 1966. It was in Pierre that she met Duane Jackson, a recent high school graduate who worked at the State House. Linda’s dad also worked at the State House and after discovering that Duane needed a place to stay, gave him Linda’s bedroom. You’ve probably heard Linda tell this story!
Linda went on to attend Northern State College in Aberdeen, S.D., where she played drums in the marching and concert bands. She graduated with an associate’s degree in business. After college, she returned to Sioux Falls, where she married Duane Aug. 10, 1968, at Hope Lutheran Church.
Linda’s professional life was diverse and fulfilling. She held various positions, including working as a carhop at A&W, a secretary for Tractor Supply Stores, a bookkeeper for a small trucking company, and a teletypist at Sears Catalog Department. Alongside Duane, she owned and operated 13 Nutrisystem Weight Loss Centers across several states.
Later in life, she started Linda Jackson Consulting, helping individuals, churches, and small businesses set up their bookkeeping on QuickBooks, a role she loved. She also worked part-time at Sanford Breast Health Institute (now Edith Sanford Breast Center) as a receptionist, scheduler and transcriptionist, where she found great satisfaction.
Linda had a wide range of interests and hobbies. She enjoyed golf, bowling, reading, knitting, needlepoint, traveling with Duane, and music. Those who knew Linda well recall her love for animals, especially dogs and cats. One special dog, Sylvan, provided her peace and comfort after Duane’s passing. Linda thoroughly enjoyed being a mom and grandma above all and loved to watch all of her grandchildren’s performances and sporting events.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Rebecca Irwin, CNP, and the entire staff at Bethany Lutheran Home in Brandon for their exceptional care during Linda’s final days. Many friends and family also visited Linda frequently in her final weeks, all of which were meaningful and appreciated by Linda and her family. Your friendship and thoughtfulness helped provide peace during challenging times.
Linda, of Sioux Falls, passed away May 24, 2024 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Brandon, S.D. She was 75.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28 at Custer Cemetery with a family reception following at Custer Lutheran Fellowship.
Linda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Duane; her sister, Sharon Mathiesen; and her parents, Erma Mae and Thomas Ray Hattervig.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Shelly (Mike) Grinde and Jon (Nicky) Jackson, both of Colton, S.D.; her grandchildren, Carter (fiancé Erica Bousema) and Lauren Grinde, and Emma, Broedy, and Dylan Jackson; brothers-in-law, Jim Mathiesen of Canton, S.D., and Bruce (Carol) Jackson of Champlin, Minn.; sister-in-law, Sharon Mathison of Hartford, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends.  
In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted and directed to charities that held special significance for Linda.
Linda will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of her family.
