Mark Helgerson
Mark “Doc” Helgerson was born July 11, 1951, in Yankton, S.D. He lived a life full of hard work, humor and heart. He was happiest when helping others, spending time in the woods “killing trees” or surrounded by the dogs and pets he loved. Doc was deeply loyal to his friends and family, and he carried a gift for making people feel welcome and cared for.
Doc, of Custer, S.D., passed away at his home Aug. 14, 2025. He was 74.
He is survived by his son, Aaron (Traci); his sister, Carrie; his brother, Paul (Sharon); two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also remembered with love by his brother, Rick Wheeler, and his many friends, including the crew at French Creek Supply in Custer.
A celebration of his life and potluck will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the 1881 Courthouse Museum, 411 Mt. Rushmore Road, Custer. Family and friends are invited to bring a dish, share stories, and join together to honor Doc’s memory.
