Poor weather hampers Newcastle meet
One week removed from competing in nearly 90-degree weather in Chadron, Neb., the Custer High School track team traveled to Newcastle, Wyo., for the Laura Chord Memorial Track Meet last Thursday.
They were greeted by more typical Wyoming/South Dakota track weather.
Athletes endured rain, sleet, snow and increasingly decreasing temperatures throughout the day—a day that was made longer by the fact the meet had junior high events throughout, as well.
“It was horrible weather. It was the longest meet,” head coach Karen Karim said. “The kids were very cold. It was a tough meet to do well at. The kids did pretty well considering the weather and length of the meet.”
Despite the poor weather some Wildcats were able to post personal record marks and/or bring home medals, including Karyn Ellerton, who placed first in both the shot put and discus in the meet, throwing the shot put 37-1 while posting a best park of 123-1 in the discus.
Kiran Pesicka also brought home a gold medal from the meet, winning the 400 in a time of 1:07.55, while Kelsey Stiefel won the pole vault with a top height of 11-6.

The 3200 relay team of Halverson, Noble, Ham and Riley Messer was fourth at 11:47.12, as was Karmyn Ellerton in the triple jump at 29-7 1/2. Gloria Keller rounded out the fourth-place finishes by clearing a personal record height of 8-6 in the pole vault.

The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in the Southern Hills Early Bird Meet tomorrow at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, but weather may very will put the kibosh on that meet. If so, the Wildcats will next be in action next Tuesday at the Douglas Early Bird Meet in Box Elder.
