Shauna Zacher’s score of 118 led the Custer High School girls golf team last Thursday morning when the Wildcats traveled south to Southern Hills Golf Course for the Hot Springs Invitational.
“I am really happy with how the girls are progressing through the season,” head coach Haley Uphoff said. “We are coming up on conference and region and I think we will be playing our best golf at that time, which of course is the goal.”
Zacher’s score was good for 18th place at the meet. The next-best score for the Wildcats came from the clubs of Lauryn Robb, who fired a score of 123, which was good for second place. Other Wildcat scores included Makenna Allen at 140, Maddie Meyer at 149 and Julianna Uphoff at 157.
As a team, the Wildcats finished with a score of 530, which put them in fifth place. Spearfish led the way with a score of 403, followed by Hot Springs at 410, St. Thomas More at 436 and Lead-Deadwood at 516.
Alison Kennedy of Spearfish was medalist at the meet with a score of 92.
The Wildcats were back in Hot Spring yesterday for the Black Hills Conference meet, and will travel to Spearfish next Tuesday for the Region 8A meet, which will determine the players who get to participate in the state meet.
The South Dakota High School Activities Association recently passed a rule that will see the size of the state championship field in Class A golf cut to allow the top 50 percent of region players to play at state rather than 60 percent of players to enter the tournament.
