Robert Studt

Robert George Studt, 75, of Custer, SD passed away on June 25, 2022, at Monument Health Sturgis Care Center after several years of health issues.

Bob was born in Presho, SD to John and Della (Quillin) Studt on Nov. 6, 1946, the second of seven children.  He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Custer, SD.   He attended the New Lincoln Country Grade School through sixth grade, spent his seventh grade at Shriners Childrens Hospital in Minneapolis due to physical disabilities; finished eighth grade back at New Lincoln Country Grade School and graduated from Kennebec High School.   He attended Southern State Teachers College (University of South Dakota) for Auto Body Repair and also Night Classes in Rapid City, SD for machining and welding.

At a very early age Bob worked on the family farm driving a tractor, helping with field work and putting up hay in the summer.  Bob often included his younger brother, Roger, when he was doing farm work.  Both, Bob and his brother, Roger, competed in the local rodeos. They enjoyed hunting together and taking camping and fishing trips to the Big Horn Mountains.  Bob and Roger were the best of friends their entire lives.

Bob started out with a career in auto body repair in Sioux Falls but later moved to Custer, SD.  He was part owner in a Saw Mill and worked in the timber with the Forest Service bidding on logging sales.  After that, he opened his own machining and welding business.   He was a good mechanic, excellent machinist (could custom make anything a customer needed) and was very talented making things out of leather.

Bob was married November 1968 to Martha Newberg and from this union there were three children, Amy, Clay and Jess.

In 1997, Bob met his soulmate, Elaine, who became his wife. They shared 25 years together, being married for 21 years.  Sharing their love of horses, they spent many memorable hours together riding horses, raising a few colts.  They attended the Black Hills Stock Show with friends, Horseback Poker Rides in Custer State Park and Horseback Camping trips to the Big Horns.

Being grateful for sharing his life are  his wife, Elaine,  daughter Amy Kirk of Hermosa, SD, son Clay (Susan) Studt of Custer,  SD,  son Jess Studt of Spearfish, SD;  granddaughters  Renee’  Kirk,   Eva Studt,  Abby Studt, Lacy Studt and Carlie Studt, grandsons  Myles Kirk,  Tommy Studt;  sisters Judy Raybon of Wendell, NC,  Mary Lou (Tony) Urban of Presho, SD,  Lucy (Kim) Halverson of Oacoma, SD  and Lavonne Miller of Aberdeen, SD;  sister-in-law Diane Studt  of Presho SD,  brother-in-law Tim Boysen of Kennebec, SD; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  Bob was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and a good friend.  He will be missed by many.
