Roger Behlings
Roger Duwane Behlings, 86, passed away peacefully at home July 9, 2025. He was resident of Custer, S.D., for more than 60 years.
He was born Aug. 4, 1938, in Revillo, S.D., to Arthur and Viola Behlings. He grew up on the family farm near Revillo with 9 siblings.
He graduated from Revillo High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Army, and served in Korea with 17th Artillery.
Upon returning home Roger married his sweetheart, Rosemary Tuchscherer (common spelling) in 1963 and moved to Custer to start a new life together.
Roger worked for the Black Hills Electric Cooperative, where he worked as a lineman for 34 years and had a deep appreciation for his Black Hills Electric Cooperative family.
Roger and Rosie started a family and had three strapping, charismatic boys. Roger relished in loading his family up and going camping and fishing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter.
Roger had a strong competitive nature and loved winning a good debate. He enjoyed board games and playing cards with family and friends. Plus, spending time in his woodworking shop, especially making Christmas decorations to light up their yard every Christmas.
Roger was committed to helping the community and worked a number of years on the city council. After retirement he enjoyed going to a local café to have coffee and breakfast with the guys.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary; parents, Arthur and Viola Behlings; brothers, Willis and Bill; and four sisters, Rosemary, Phyllis, Norma and Sharon.
Roger will be greatly missed by his survivors - sons, Tim Behlings (Jenny) of Custer, Joel Behlings (Christie) of Custer, Brian Behlings (Brenda) of Hill City, S.D. three grandchildren, Russell Behlings (Tessah) of Custer, Joshua Behlings (Courtney) of Custer and Jacie Behlings of Custer; step-grandchildren, Ashley (Cesareo Meza) Nimick, Thomas (Emily) Nimick and Marcus Myers of Hill City; brother, Lyle Behlings (Janet) of Milbank, S.D.; sister, Donna Poel of Milbank; and two great-grandchildren, Ellen and Alice Behlings.
Funeral arrangements by Chamberlain-McColley Funeral Home. Graveside public services will be at the Custer Cemetery July 24 at 10 a.m. Coffee will be served after the service.
Memorial donations to the Behlings family can be made to the Custer VFW or the Custer American Legion in his honor.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.
